View Full Version : UTEC in Australia!!! - knocking due to cold air

I'm Tim, from Sydney, Australia.
I came across the NASIOC forums in my travels on trying to find information on the TurboXs UTEC computers.
I own a Australian Delivered 2.0L WRX (Non STI), and am unsure on how much you guys n girls will be able to help me, but any help will always be greatly appreciated - as there is just no one over here to help me, due to the lack of WRX owners using this ECU.
I have currently a stage 4 setup (i think) - according to the USA setups - this being
TurboXs UTEC
VF22 Turbo
STI 550cc Injectors
255 Walbro Pump
Catless Uppipe
Dump pipe w/ 3" Exhaust + High Flow Cat
TurboXs FMIC
Short Ram AirPod
TurboXS RLF BOV
Unfortunately there are not that many people using the UTEC in Australia. The # is growing, but slowly. My car has been tuned by TurboXs over here in Australia, but i have a small problem which i am hoping some of you will be able to shead some light on. I am running the below maps, but my problem is with the difference of air temperatures between the day time and the night time.
Map 1 - 13psi on 11.1afr
Map 2 - 17.5psi on 10.8afr
Problems.....
Map 1 - No Problems
Map 2 - PROBLEMS!!! But only when cold air is a factor???
During the day, i dont get a knock signal thru the CEL (well very rarely). Air Temp being 27-30 degrees Celcius.
During the evening/night, i get knock signal thru the CEL constantly. Every time i give it a hit, it will knock. Air Temp being around 15-20 degrees Celcius.
This knocking occurs around 4500-5500 and usually only in 3rd or 4th gear pull.
How do u tune around this problem?
Do u need to take fuel out? Add fuel?
Add timing, take out timing?
Take out boost?

tmarcel 03-20-2006, 11:09 AM Welcome! If you're running the UTEC version 5 software/firmware you can set your Temperature Comensation settings in the parameters area of the UTEC. The colder it gets, you'll want to pull timing and add fuel as a general rule. I'm not talking about a ton of timing, maybe -.5* (half a *) up to -2* if it's really cold (like less than 0c). Maybe add up to +.2 to .3 fuel. It's all under the temp settings.
If your map doesn't knock in the day and only when colder at night then that's what I'd do.
If it's knocking in the day and night you will want to take a little timing out where it's happening and see if it corrects it. You can then try to add a little fuel in that area. I would still make the temp correction settings to compensate once you've got the knocks taken care of.
If you're still confused call TXS Aus and have them walk you through it ;)

rstlss 03-20-2006, 11:44 AM At first, my problem is what u stated - knocking during the day and night. So i had TXS take out some of the timing.
It was weird though because on the dyno, i was running 22.5 timing @ 5250-7500rpm and there was no knocking anywhere, and we thought we had a good tune. But when it hit the road, the knocking showed up straight away, so it is now down to 21.0 timing at the same rpm. At first we thought the problem was noise from my gearbox - i am running straight cut gears 1st to 4th - but then we put the headphones on the block and couldnt hear any major noise from the gearbox except for the obvious whine.
The headphones were not picking up any knock either just last week, which was weird?!? But i have been driving on the weekend and getting the knock regularly...
Copy map 2 on num. 3 and take -1 I all the timing map. Copy map2 in num.4 and take out -1 off the whole timing map and add .5 to the whole fuel map. test both and then log it . if it worked out correct the afected loads on map 2.
Freon 03-20-2006, 03:16 PM Check your logs. Compare your MAF and boost between cold and warm days. If boost is the same, I'd just pull some timing before I added fuel. If your boost is higher, you can tone it down. Maybe also check your AFR.
You should overall get better performance in the cold. You really need to look at your logs and see what has changed and is causing the problem. Obviously timing has not, but airflow and AFR may have.

One of the things that we've learned over here is that the dyno tune isn’t really representative of the final state of tune; it’s only a tool to get you close.
Different dynos are different in how they simulate the real world, but all of them are a simulation and require real world road testing before calling a tune final.
If you have a chance to take a log of the car please email it to me and CC Wayne on the email. I’ll try to give you some help.

As u can see, the knock is showing up at just under 4500rpm.
On the way to work 2nite, i gave it a hit on this same map (our weather has cooled down very nicely - 18C degrees) and got knock straight away in 2nd gear.....didnt have the laptop hooked up though.

Look at your utec ignition timing at 4300 to 4500rpm, goes from +18.5 degress to +9.5 which in the 80% 90% & 100% load column registers knock. Try smoothing the tranistion by using no more than 2-3 degrees from one cell to the next. Or add 4-5 degress back into you Utec map between these rpms at 80%-100% column.

Yeah i saw this, but that is the UTEC dropping the timing due to the knock showing up isnt it? It drops it 2 degrees for every knock that it picks up, so 6 knocks = 12 degrees dropped. So that is why it has dropped to +9.5 from +18.5. I think it is a safety measure the UTEC has.
Because my Timing Map actually goes +18.5 to +19.5 to +20.5 to +21.0 between 4000 - 7500rpm in a smooth increase already.....
xolosis 03-22-2006, 07:03 AM That makes sense to me and if that is the case you should try adding a tad more fuel at those knock points, but not too much or you will may get misfire.

pull timing in the following load cells:
4000/80 -1
4250/80 -1
4250/90 -1
4250/100 -1
4500/90 -1
4500/100 -1
this is the point of highest torque output and VE for the engine. it is very knock prone here. it is also the point at which you need the least amount of advance to achive minimum best timing.

I'm still having major knocking problems.
I am gonna go home now and try a Map i have put together at work from scratch, then see how that goes. It is using my Map i am having problems with, but i have taken out some timing in mid RPM and made transitions smoother, and also have taken out a little boost around the areas affected by Knocking.
Also, Should my boost Map be smooth transitions also - without large jumps in numbers such as 300 to 350 in the next row %??? Or is it different to the timing map - so instead i can have those larger gaps??
Freon 03-28-2006, 03:58 PM Boost map isn't that important. There is a lot of "springyness" in the boost control system. It's more of a drivability thing.
Can you post your timing map? +18 might be slightly too agressive at 4000-4500rpm at full boost.

My boost figures look slightly better t han what they were - they were jumping by about 50 on the UTEC map.
My timing figures i have changed also. I have reduced the timing as follows...

I have run this 2nite on the way to work, and has not shown any knock at all, air temps around 18C degrees. I also did some runs with the data logger and it is holding boost nicely at around 17.5psi and and not showing any knocks at all.
I am gonna get the car onto a dyno so i can check the fuel mixtures are still ok, but they should still be around 10.8 - 11.2:1
Would this mean that i might have solved my problems???
If so, in which direction should i head now with getting down to a fine tune???
Should i be looking at increasing some timing in parts and seeing if knocking shows up? Or do you think i wont get anything else out of it and i should just leave it???

well, if you're anything like me, you probably won't leave it alone... :lol:
can you get a little more power? sure you can, 99% of the time... but it will be more prone to knocking. that's the tradeoff: power vs. stability/safety.
