Ive heard a few people saying they have had problems with sever piston slap using drop in forged pistons. Its a good idea to hone the cylinders whenever pistons come out but it sounds like bore the motor slightly may be the key to avoiding making your car sound like a diesel.
Go to Google and type in Subaru Stroker. You will find places all over the world selling kits to stroke your motor to 2.2.
If you wanted to go extreme you could order sleeves and have a place put them in.

get the deck closed by outback motors, put a good set of rods and pistons in it, get a set of cams and valve spring set and it will support about 500hp, and if you really want torque, buy a 2.5L short block, its cheaper then those stroker kits.
