View Full Version : load carrier for sedan is cool

lgkahn

The load carrier for the sedan I got from the UK is really cool.

There are already reinforced mounting brackets/points on the roof
under the weather molding.

All you do is remove the molding.. and screw these little brackets into them and then reattach, the molding.

You leave the brackets on (they only stick up an extra half inch or so.

Then you can put on and remove the rack/carrier in less than a minute. It locks also so it cannot be stolen.

The brackets and the carrier clamp are each specific for one corner of the roof.

Then you can put any of the yakima products on the carrier.

I will post a picture tomarrow.

Yeah, thanks a bunch! I'd really be interested in getting one of these set-ups, but I'd want to know (1) if there's much chance it scuffs the paint, and (2) how easy it is to remove completely. And how much, where to order, etc etc!

I don't see how it can scratch the paint unless you drag the rack across the roof while installing it... the only place it touches the paint is under the moldings.. see attached pictures..

I got it from www.cheammotors.co.uk in the uk
call their parts dept...

about 200 us.. including fed ex shipping... then you can put an of the racks on it...

Sorry, just to clarify: the ~$200 got you the mounting brackets and the feet and bars? Do you think other rack (like Thule) feet could mount into those tabs?

Pretty cool stuff.
Paul

lgkahn
09-30-2001, 11:04 PM
the 200 us got everything you see there.. the tabs to screw into the mount points the 4 feet and 2 bars.. I don't think thule or any others will work unless they are designed for the car..

the tabs are specific to each corner of the car as are the feet..

You mentioned Yakima in your first post, but those crossbars are definitely Thule-style (square) not Yakima (round). Looks like a great solution for the sedans.

BTW, what kind of gauges are those in your dash pod?

Fargin' A! I gotta get me one of those!

ps: BTW, love the car color, cos it's the same as mine! Haha :D

lgkahn

those are r1 racing gauges in the dash pod..
(search for other thread on this)

They may be square but goto www.subaruparts.com and they sell mounting kits for 10 to mount the yakima hardware on flat cross bars. These cross bars are supposed to be the same as the flat oem cross bars you can buy for wagons.

Rocky WRX
10-01-2001, 09:51 AM
Umm, as a wagon owner I can say with 1st hand authority that the crossbars you have are not what comes on most wagons here in the US. Those crossbars are much flatter, almost like an aircraft wing. Subaru offers round Yakima-style crossbars as an option, which is what I got instead of the flat bars that were originally installed on my wagon.

This picture shows a Thule crossbar, which is square like what you have. Not that the type really matters, you can get a ton of accessories to fit whatever system you have.:)

lgkahn
10-01-2001, 03:32 PM
well I don't know because I got some mounting brackets for the square cross members and they fit perfectly on these ones.

Only problem is when I looked up the part number they were the mounting brackets for the roof cargo basket not the ski rack..
I will let you know for sure when I get the brackets but I am pretty sure they will work.. Also I asked the guy in the UK when I ordered the rack and he confirmed that these would work with the subaru ski rack.

Maybe the square cross bars are different for the wrx???

here is the part number to mount the various parts on the load carrier
E3610LS140 Ski Clamp Kit Square

Ok I got the mounting brackets for the ski rack I mentioned in the last post and they do indeed work fine for mounting the subaru ski rack to the load carrier.

Pikeadon

that looks like a nice setup for a roof rack.
How strong is the mount of the rack to the car, the tabs look really small? How long did it take to ship from the UK?
thanks

lgkahn
11-26-2001, 12:25 AM
Well they seem pretty strong and I got to believe the designers knew what they were doing.. they were designed for this load carrier...

anyway it took about 10 days to get from the uk.. but someone else has said they haven't got theirs yet in a long time.. don't know if they only emailed or called and talked to the people as I did.

Does anyone know if a different bike carrier will work on those cross bars? I love that setup and would like to get one for my sedan, but I cannot use the upright bike carrier because of the frame design of my bike. TIA,

Duh, guess I should have read a little better while at work... so once the load carrier s there you can use any attachment from Yakima??????????

I've been working with Jim Childs at Cheam in the UK to order a load carrier (E3610FE520) and 4-horiz ski adapter (E3617AE570) for a couple of weeks, and here's what I finally heard yesterday:

I`m sorry for delay, as your ski carrier has gone on to back order.
I have no E.T.A as yet, but working hard.

I will advise you as and when you can expect these.

I tried ordering online first, then found out the web orders were not working by phone. Why can't we get something as simple as this in the US???

lgkhan, can you scan and post the install instructions for the load carrier?? Just wondering if this is a quick or nightmarish installation...

Not avaialbe in the US. I bought one directly from Cheam Motors just outside London, very simple procedure. They were shipping to the US at some point.

International calls from a cell phone = insane $$$

I got mine a few months ago. Price has gone up considerably due to exchange -- you're looking at just over $300 for the mounts w/locks and basic cross bars. You'll need to spend more for a Yakima or Thule mount for skis, cargo box or whatever.

Did the entire deal via e-mail, although I had to send a few messages before I got a response.

p/n E3610SE520 (http://www.cheammotors.co.uk/products.php?productId=135)

(£119.11 and £45.00 shipping, + a bit more for duty from Cheam Motors UK -- I worked with the parts manager, Jim Childs (jimchilds@cheammotors.demon.co.uk).

Despite the cost, this was the only setup I considered. The mount is slick in a way that only OEM could do.

I don't know about the one on the site you listed. It looks like it will work though. Actually any impreza rack from '02 to current will work. I am positive the rack I had on my '02 WRX, that is now on my '04 Sti will fit any '05 impreza. It is not hard to get ahold of. I Also got mine from Cheam motors. It was easy. Try getting one from them by e-mailing their parts department.

That's a good walkthrough. I will stress to not use a lot of force, otherwise you will be buying new clips. Cold weather may not help the pliability of the clips, either. I did mine a few years ago without issues, it really isn't that big a deal (though I was concerned).

Taping the rack bar ends is key, mine whistled like a tea kettle until I did that.

Gharari & lgkahn, Great info for a guy that just got an STi! Now I need to figure out how to transport lumber & a kayak. Ok, two kayaks.

Does anyone have specs on the euro-rack? I've seen Thule's and Yakima's offerings and am more than a bit nervous since the same system recentely "egressed" a friend's car with her kayak; ugly, really really ugly. I *like* the concept of bolting to the roof! How much weight is it spec'd for? What little I've found on-line indicates it will fit my '05 STi.

It has square bars. Are they the same dimensions as Thule (i.e. do the thule accessories fit?)?

gharari
08-24-2005, 01:57 AM
Thule accessories fit perfectly. Yakima accessories should fit too as they usually come with adapters for Thule style bars.

As far as weight capacity goes, I haven't seen any specific numbers on the web. I think I still have the manual for the load carrier and it may have some specs. I think it would be safe to say that it can handle the same load as the Thule equivalent, but don;t hold me to it.

I'll look at my manual when I get a chance.

I paid 119.11 pounds plus 45 pounds for shipping back in 11/2004. I don't think they charged me tax. You can also try to call their phone number during business hours in the UK. 020 8394 2266.

You can also do a google search for E3610SE520 which is the part number. I did that search and still didn't find anyone in the U.S. That carries (no pun intended) this thing.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Thanks.

I agree with you about not being able to get it here in the U.S. It's just plain stupid. I had the Yakima and didn't like it at all. It clipped to the flimsy trim around the windows which are not meant to support any weight or pressure. It also had pads that contacted paint. The pads ended up falling on a weird spot on the car too. It was just rinky-dink compared to the Subaru. I hope the Thule works out better for you than the Yakima did for me.

Yeah, this is not a high profit item, and international shipping is not something they do often, so calling them is your best bet. Jim was easy to work with and the entire process was pretty quick. Make sure they don't charge VAT, that saves a significant amount.

Bump this.

I have jdm rainguards and I'd love to get the mounting brackets to keep the gaurds on.

I also have a thule rack with the feet as well. So can I just purchase the mounting points?

What exactly would I need to get these working with my thule setup?

gharari

I don't know what jdm rainguards are.

Thule racks work on the Euro Load Carrier, as stated previously.

The Euro Load Carrier is what you'd need if you already have the mounts on your roof.

The JDM rainguards clip into the same spot as the original thule positions.

Thanks gharari I saw that thread but I don't know where to source the pieces. I haven't heard from Cheam yet.

So once I get the EDM pieces I can just use those pieces instead of the foot pads that came with Thule correct?

It's hard to see from the pics, but I'm not sure exactly how that's seated on the roof. I see the clips but I don't know how the outside part is clipping in on the roof.

I'm sure I sound like a retard but maybe I need to see some close up pics without the trim there. :)

Also, I guess it's the same item from japanparts? :)

I still don't understand what the JDM rainguards are and what they have to do with the Euro Rack. Obviously if there is something already using the built in roof rack mounts on your impreza roof, you will have issues mounting the Euro Rack to them, but maybe I am misunderstanding.

Cheam is the only source I have heard of for the Euro Rack.

The Euro rack looks like it looks in all the pictures of it that can be found by reading these two threads. It includes the feet and crossbars, so you don't use the Thule feet, which is the whole point of buying the Euro rack. You just by an accessory Thule or Yakima rack for sksi, bikes, etc. The Euro rack uses a square bar which works best with Thule (ski bike, etc) racks, as opposed to Yakima racks which use round bars (although they usually come with square bar adapters).

Not sure what you mean on your 4th question/statement, but the pics posted are all that I have. Maybe you can find someone local in "Dark Ninja Cricket" that has the rack and you can check it out in person.

no comment on #5 ;)

The japanparts item is different. Not sure of the details of the differences.

OK, Now I se the rainguards. The things that deflect rain from the fronts of the windows, right? I don;t see how these would affect mounting the Euro Rack.

So, is post #52 a new version of the Euro Rack? How does it mount? I think the major appeal of the euro rack is that it doesn't contact paint and uses the built in brackets. How does that one mount? A lower profile would certainly be an improvement.

Magnum626
01-20-2007, 12:38 PM
You can always put some 3m rockblocker material on the roof so there's no contact. You can still purchase some by the foot. That's what I used to do with my thule.

Oh and no the rainguards won't affect the EDM racks.

I just found this thread. It seems like the best alternative to the Euro Rack. I still think the Euro rack is better because it doesn't touch the paint, but this is still very good. Advantages of the Yakima: You can use the Yakima spoiler and it has a lower profile than the Euro Rack.
