yeah it is working again..the wireless is working but when i connect it to my computer straight it wont work.. well atleast my laptop gets is working..

you'll have to check some of your settings and make sure the LAN is enabled. if you have your wireless turned on and you are trying to connect via LAN, then the wireless will override your LAN. you have to turn off the wireless first then repair your LAN connection.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.... You can connect to the Internet wirelessly with your laptop, but you cannot connect to the Internet with your desktop. Both the laptop and the desktop are connected to a router/gateway, the laptop via WiFi and the desktop via a cable, right?

I just want to understand what is going on before I blab. I do this kind of stuff for a living.

just to let you know, we had 2 outages this morning from 3 am to about 9 am. the hillside (O'Malley) and Huffman (Jerome St) towers. they are both up and running now, but in case you happened to go online and nothing happened, wanted to let you know.

I'll try to keep everyone updated as much as possible if there is a scheduled outage or a technical problem with the system.

glad you got everything figured out, loth. i figured it was either your network card wasn't detecting the lan settings/on or you were missing drivers. did you get a new laptop?

What kind of pings do you guys get with Clearwire to the lower 48? I don't like the cost of GCI cable, but it's necessary for me to play BF2.

Haakon

Hehe, I am not trying to be argumentative (is that a word? :p ), but I really haven't found GCI to be that expensive. Granted, I have pretty much sold my soul to them, so I get discounts everywhere. I had a very bad experience with then ATU (ACS now) and I have hated them ever since. It was their fault, too, but of course they thought I was the one at fault until I proved them wrong. I even threatened them with a civil suit and had a lawyer ready. Jerks.

I pay $50 for 5Mbps down and 256Kbps up. Since I don't host a server, the upload doesn't bother me a bit. Most of the bandwidth is download, anyway, for most people.

JordyB

Clearwire uses GCI as their transport so...ping times will be close to the same, maybe even a bit more.

AKLGT

i'm not a gamer so i can't tell you about pings. wes is a good person to ask. i know he plays BF2.

Haakon, sounds like you have a nice deal with GCI. not everyone gets good deals. lol. as soon as we get to a place that we can get dish, we'll be rid of them once and for all. no acs, no gci.

How is a dish better then fiber?

It takes me 27ms to make it from Anchorage to Seattle.

AKLGT

a dish? are you asking about our system? it is not satellite and therefore does not work on a dish set up. we use pre-wimax technology very similar to cellular or wifi technology. it is faster than wifi and more reliable as well as a much much longer range.

and we do use GCI as our backbone to run to WA. so i would imagine the ping times would be very very close if not a little faster since we are sending the data from your modem/antenna via RF to our tower that sends it straight on down to Seattle vs over the miles of copper and fiber to the central box at GCI and then on down. realistically, it would be just about the same i would suspect.

I meant with what you said about moving into your own building and onto your own dish, IE satellite since theres really only two ways to travel 2000+ miles...Fiber, or Satellite and most satellite runs into a 500+ MS delay.

And i'm almost betting at your current wire center agg. point, your running either HS copper or fiber to a router...and then one or two hops away to Seattle which could be faster then cable but you still have all the other RF gear to go thru so who really knows, LOL.

My point is, theres nothing wrong with being on a fully redundant fiber network from Ak to Sea and Org with a ping to under 60 ms...

MY interpretation was that as soon as They move inot a new place, they'll have Dish for TV, and clearwire for internet.. no more dealing with GCI/ACS directly. (that is my assumption of her statement)

And to be quite honest, the average consumer that types emails and surfs for pr0n wouldnt notice a whole big difference between 26ms and 36ms.

Haakon is correct though, if you dont have a package deal with GCI, you get a bit reamed on individual services. (i.e. ONLY High speed modem vs that bundled into basic cable)

JordyB

I thought Dish TV in Anchorage was now owned by ACS? or do they just re-sell?

AKSubie

Honestly, havent a clue. I didnt think they were owned by ACS.

JordyB
03-27-2006, 05:21 PM
Well I atleast know ACS has package deals with phone, internet, and (tv) using Dish...

EDIT: Found it...

most consumers don't realize how much they actually pay GCI. it's NOT the $79.99 they tell you or lead you to believe. after we added up all the fees for tv, phone, internet, etc, we were paying WELL over $135/month! and that was only 1 mbs speed, one cable box and no additional movie packages.

and yes, i would be getting rid of cable tv altogether and going with dish network, NOT owned by ACS. ACS is a reseller, but afaik all installs are done by Rocket Satellite.

If only my payment was $135 a month....****ers keep adding **** i dont know about. Last month they said my payment was $180. They screwed up double charging me on a few things. Its been 5 months straight now that I had to call and correct them. Its also a bitch to get through....F U C K Gci....If only clearwire had a month to month :(

AKLGT
03-30-2006, 04:24 PM
ya sorry. no month to month. would be nice, i know. still too new a company and it takes a long time to even make up the cost for every person who signs up. unlike GCI, we only have one service to make a profit from.

but.... i hear from the grapevine, our VOIP is coming just around the corner to compete with Vonage and others. will have AK numbers, but can't do the number portability since it's not regulated by the FCC (or something like that) oh well. i don't really care about the phone number. unlimited calls to US, Canada and Puerto Rico! :D
