I'm far too exhausted and pissed at myself to do a search. I'm 99% sure the leak I've got after rebuilding the 2.5 in my STi is the rear main. It's in too far. I didn't know. I pushed this one in 'til it stopped. It doesn't say in the tech manual since the subaru tool must stop it for you.

Can I tap a new one in on top and get the right depth, or fish this one out first and do it right? The gasket kit came with 3. Maybe they want me to pound all three of the damn things in.

Either way, I'm pulling the motor tomorrow. I don't know why I'm asking about saving 10 minutes of labor. I'm an idiot.

This has been the hardest post not to swear in ever.

At least the motor fired right up once it got fuel.

Since you have extras I'd say remove it and re-install a new one.

i think the seal is supposed to be flush with the block after you work it into position. too bad i dont have a spare motor layin' around to confirm.

Bummer. i did the same exact thing. Not a huge issue though.

You have to pull the one out because it blocks the oil drain into the pan for that rear bearing. That is why you are probably blowing a ton of oil out the back of the block.

So pull the seal out and install a new one but make it flush with the block, don't push it in.

The rear main is fixed. But thankfully a host of other fragile parts are not.

Word to the wise. Don't bid on any matte-black STis on ebay anytime soon.
