View Full Version : Is the Unichip / other piggybacks that bad?

So ive got a reflashed TXS stage 2 unichip that i bought off of someone a while back simply because it was so much cheaper than an accessport. Now that I have been running it for a while I have noticed a lot of misfires in hard pulls (~4k or so in 3rd gear) and the car drives more powerfully ovbiously but it seems like it could be a bit smoother. Is it really worth sending it off to GPmoto and having them reflash it to my current mods and desired boost level? Will this help the smoothness of the car? I really want to be able to do some datalogging as well but from what I can see the Unichip will give me values that arent really happening. I know UTEC and the like are a great alternative, but for the cheap cost is a Unichip reflash that bad or should I bite the bullet and go with some other form of EM?????? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

if you insist on sticking with a unichip, i suggest you drive to a tuner and allow them to custom map it to suit your car and its quirks..

if you send it to GPmoto you will be happy.. sean logan is an awsome tuner and can build base maps for about anything with his eyes closed.... send it to GP you wont be dissapointed

well ive had this chip on for several months now. i am just asking this to determine why everyone has a negative view on the unichip besides the fact that its a first gen setup that doesnt do every little thing that the utec does

Sean flashed and then reflashed my unichip after I sent current dyno plots and afr/boost maps. Car is smooth and fast. Mine is setup for turboback, upipe, and I made 206whp on a Dyno Dynamic dyno (242 if you convert the numbers to dynojet correction) That was before I had installed the catless DP.

do you have any issues with misfires, esp under WOT pulls? did he do a reflash after you had your car on the dyno with that reflashed map?

After the orignial tune by GPmoto there was some detonation on the dyno, and at this dyno day I went to there were also cars with "better" tuning methods with det as well. Mine was almost all right around 5500 but no misfires.
Now I would have to get it dynoed again but the car is amazingly smoother as Sean was able to identify the problem spots and clean them up. Would be no different with ANY shelf maps for other methods.

Unichip is good enough for many cars and applications, APS uses them and has probably forgotten more than many tuners will know when it comes to Suby's. If you have a good tune and no issues there is no reason to switch to AP or ECUtek.

Really the best way to go if money permits is to get the car tuned on the dyno by a qualified person that can make the most from your car safely. I will go that route eventually.
