View Full Version : Doors are just too thin!

Well, I'm about to give up on my WRX sound system sounding awesome.

I have DEI 3065's in the doors being driven by a RF Punch 400.4. Without any soundproofing the system sounded like it was playing out of a tin can. This weekend I put a layer of Cascade VB2 deadening sheets on the door panel surfaces. I also put a DeFlex pad behind each mid speaker. The sound quality is improved at average volumes but when I crank it, the cheapness of the doors is once again a factor.

I'm really not sure what to do next and I'm getting sick of trying more things only to still be disappointed.

This is very annoying since I'm pretty much in love with the performance of this car but the acoustics are horrendous.

Does anybody have a suggestion for me?

Would adding another layer of soundproofing do any good?

Just to confirm, you put a layer on the outer door skin and one on the interior as well? I imagine another layer would help dampen the outer door skin. I know that with Brown Bread it is said that two layers is much more effective than just one in the sense that if one layer dampens X amount, two layers dampens 2.5X. Just a thought.

more deadening the better. go to www.partsexpress.com. they have it for really cheap on there. it's not dynamat but works just as good. i think a sheet of 29x32 is like $10.00 or something plus the more you buy the cheaper it is. are you heating up the material after you apply it or just sticking it on the doors?

You also may want to try buildouts if you haven't done so already. MDF is probably the best, but there are other things you could use that are better then just the stock location/mounting.

All great suggestions!

I have layered the inside of the outside metal panel and the surface that the speakers mount on. I have generally only done 1 layer and with Cascade products, there's no heating involved. I suppose I could add another layer if it has worked for other people.

Mitch, by buildouts, do you mean kickpanels? I have considered this but there's not much foot room in the WRX as it is especially on the driver's side. That would be the ultimate solution though because of the controlled enclosure.

I think what I may do is go to a local shop near me and have them consult me on this.

I couldn't tell from your description if you had already done this, but go ahead and dampen the inside of the plastic door panel if you haven't already. It's so thin and flexible it can really vibrate a lot. The same VB-2 will work, or just use VB-1S (the spray form) after masking closed the various openings.
