I was over on the Tari website reading things over and saw some people having problems logging/tuning due to the USB to Serial cables they are using. Is anyone here using the AP cable along with a USB-Serial cable that works? I'm curious as to which brands will work.

Open port cable? Is that the Tactrix(sp) cable?

Here is a link to my exact same experience over on the tari forum:

http://www.tari.co.za/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1134408303

summary: bought this cable for cheap http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812156008

the driver they supplied didn't work but eventually found a driver online (mentioned in the forum discussion) that worked. You are only able to datalog with the Cobb AP cable, can't flash or read the ROM.

The cable works great for datalogging though if that is all your interested in. You can't beat it for $14 :)

Good luck

Straight from the site:
COBB AccessPORT
the cables supplied with this hardware unit will work for both diagnostics and ECU flash functions.

Doesnt that mean I would be able to tune with it?

Fixed it. The AP will do the funky baud rates your ECU needs. Your laptop won't. That is why the tactrix cable uses a high end chip, to give the odd baud rates.

Mine is called dynamix or dynamex. Best buy sells it.

So my options here are:

A. Buy a ~$40 USB-Serial Cable used only for datalogging
or
B. Buy the $80 Tactrix cable used for all the above

I guess I'll go with B.

It really is worth the money. I would say b is the good choice!

If your interested in reading and flashing your ecu with the free software out there then go for the tactrix cable. If you just want to datalog and see no future in flashing your own ecu go for the cheaper route.

Yeah I figured that much out!

I ordered the Tactrix cable today. Can't wait.

do not buy the DYNEX brand cable from bestbuy. it is pure junk and does not work. the radio shack brand usb-serial cable is much much better and works flawlessly with the cobb ap obd2 connector.
