View Full Version : PZero Nero M+S and grooved pavement?
woody77 04-05-2006, 03:56 PM Just got a set of PZero Nero M+S mounted up (stock size, stock wheels) on our '04 WRX. They're great. Except for the way that they like to follow grooved pavement around.
This normal for these, based on the tread design, or something where because they're still brand new and the glazed surface from the molds hasn't worn they're just not gripping correctly yet?
I've not been able to drive them on dry pavement yet, just wet roads, as the Bay Area is just getting poured on this spring.
But oh are they so much nicer than the RE92s in the rain. Car finally feels grippier than our 350Z on KDW2s does in the rain.
UltimateLurker 04-05-2006, 04:02 PM The grooves don't seem to bother mine. Have a look to be sure that all your tires are facing the same way, IIRC there are 2 sections that go one way, and 1 section that goes the other way.
woody77 04-05-2006, 04:15 PM That would just suck.... I'll check tonight (driving the other car today).
they definitely tramline worse than the RE92's did - I noticed it when I first got them installed, but not so much any more.

Do they need to face a specific way or just the same way?

They claim to be asymetric, non-directional. Which is frankly something I've not been able to understand. Because if asymetric, then it seems like they'll act different depending on the direction of rotation/the way they're mounted on the car. Especially since there's no "left" or "right" versions.
maxpower45 04-05-2006, 10:12 PM I have the same tramlining issue. I have a fresh set going on the car in a few weeks so I want to make sure it gets done right.
peterex 04-05-2006, 11:11 PM They tramline a touch, but I just hold the wheel tighter. :p
Back Road Runner 04-06-2006, 04:29 AM Anything with a ribbed style pattern will tramline some. It's tough to avoid. Unless you offset the tread blocks or run a V style tread pattern, you're likely going to have some tramlining. Grooves follow grooves...

the tires are marked - the side which is marked "outer" needs to be the one facing out from the car.

Thanks Doc!
bull3964 04-06-2006, 12:13 PM When was the last time you had an alignment? The tramlineing of my Pzero Neros was becoming pretty severe and I just attributed it to them wearing, but I had an alignment done last weekend (found out I had a pretty good amount of toe out, 0.13 and 0.10) and now they barely seem to tramline at all.
....I've owned two sets (225/45/17) and they do tram-line at times. However, It seems they get a bit better as they wear. ......playing with the pressure can help as well.

Which is weird, when they're mounted, 2 have the double-line facing 1 way, and 2 have the double-line facing the other.
jamest 04-06-2006, 03:03 PM I don't have a problem with tramin' on average CA grooved concrete freeways, but there have been times when the car would veer off as if I was avoiding something on the road. It is usually when there is construction going on and the road is not even. I have had no problems on asphalt or gravel.
I upgraded to wider rims and the M+S rubber at the same time so I don't know how much of each lead to more tramin. My first ride home after the upgrade felt like someone had forgot to put the lugs on. I can now predict where I'll get tramin' on my commute.
BTW I love my Pzero M+S, they've worked well in all conditions and I'm getting great tread wear out of them.
woody77 04-06-2006, 05:15 PM I checked the tires last night, and they all face "out" correctly (or all face out incorrectly, but they all match, at least). Interesting that while it's asymetric, it's non-directional, even though the curved "fang-like" sipes in the tread are definitely directional.
