My cars in need of a coolant flushing/replacement before it gets cold.

Could someone give me an idea of the difficulty level of this and maybe some instruction on it.

I know my dealer wanted something like 200 bones to do this at the service, i was broke so i told them no.

Also what coolant would you all recomend??

It's really cake. There's a drain on the passengers side of the radiator, down at the bottom obviously. Stick a drain pan under that, open the radiator cap, and open the drain. Wait until the system is drained, close the drain, fill radiator with your favorite antifreeze, put cap on. Does that seem like $200 worth of work and materials???

You are only draining the radiator if you open the radiator drain plug. Half of the coolant is still in the block.

I caution you on this, if you decide to change the Thermostat, make sure, I'll say it again, make sure its in the correct position. This isn't hard to do if you know its a problem. FOr lack of a etter term, I am going to call it a valve, when the engine gets to operating temp, the valve opens and lets coolant circulate.
In my case, the valve is not in the middle of the thermostat, its off center and the position I had the thermostat in caused it to jam into the engine block not allowing it (thermostat to fully open.) This resulted in major overheat on this expensive little aluminum block and heads. Thankfully there was no damage

SO my advice to you if you change the thermostat, make sure you remember the position of the thermostat and put the new one in the same way.

I've seen flush kits at PepBoys for something like 10 or 15 bucks. It's just a couple adapters you hook up to garden hoses (I think you need 2 hoses). It doesn't sound overly complicated and I'm thinking of getting one myself.
