I've been so busy lately I sometimes forget to post significant things that are passing by. One of those things is the new Whisper 2.5" Bolt-on Axleback. This baby should set a new axleback standard in the WRX community for its great low beat rumble, smooth refined highway manner, and throaty wide open throttle romps. This exhaust was highlighted in the January 2006 issue of SubieSport magazine where it was installed on their WRX Wagon project car.

Outward appearance is identical to it's big brother, the 3" Whisper catback. The Whisper 2.5" bolt-on axleback uses the same 3.5" slash cut double-walled and resonated tip that can easity be viewed from behind as if it was a stock exhaust. Inside it uses the same techniques employed in the 3" Whisper catback for killing off the bad sound waves that cause droning in so many wagon's(see the SubieSport issues for their opinions on the sound and stock appearance). It's a design that lets the 3" Whisper catback perform silky smooth in WRX wagons without the need of a resonator. In the 2.5" Whisper bolt-on axleback you can expect the volume to be slightly lower but with the same great sound character that has quickly made the 3" Whisper catback one of the best choices in a moderate volume 3" system.

This item is already up on our website and pre-orders have already started at a pre-order price of just $359.95 + frieght, regular $419 so get to the website now. This price is limited to the first 12 orders and we already have a number of pre-orders in hand. Photo's will be up over the weekend, but for refernce it looks identical to the current 3" Whisper catback. We'll get a sound bite up as soon as the first unit hits our door end of this week.

Thanks to Dale of MWIC fame, we now have results on the new Mad Daddy Whisper exhaust. I'm underway right now and cannot update my spreadsheet.

95dB at idle and 101dB at 3000 RPM

This puts the Whisper squarely into the quiet exhaust catagory and an option for those seeking quiet exausts.and no droning in the wagons.

and no droning in the wagons.

And those db numbers were on a full turboback with the 3" Whisper catback. The bolt-on axleback ( or catback for those that want a 2.5" catback) should come in a noticable quiter.

Hey gang,

Got the first Whisper Axleback in for some quick photos. First mini-run is due late this week for shipping to you early pre-order folks. I'll get more photos when we get in installed. I'll be looking to get this on a local vehicle this week so I can take some sound clips and db readings. Pre-Order is still going to be $359.95 till the end of April then $409 after that.

I was mostly being facetious :D

But, I do believe it looks better and sounds just as good. And if it's not as loud in the lower rpm's, that's a + in my book.

Looks like the STi Axleback... Which tempts me even more... I'm all about the stock look for my sti...

Does anyone have this bolted up?

I currently have the Maddad stealthback, with the 2.5" taper at the end of the intermediate pipe. This would be a great fit... I just really don't want a loud droning sound...

I'm definitely liking the look, and may have to buy one anyhow...

It does NOT drone. I got rid of my Hush for the Whisper and couldn't be happier.

The fist Whisper 2.5" bolt-on was hand delivered to a local MA. customer today. We won't be able to ship current back orders beyond this till the first week of may due to being closed next week for a little vacation action(OK 10 year wedding anniversary...woohoo). I'm going to hook up with the new Whisper owner when I get back to grab some sound bites. I honestly feel this will be the new benchmark in an axleback for it's charasmatic sound character, no drone design, and smooth laid back cruise quality. Good stuff.

Looks very nice. My Borla Hush also drones on a highway around 60-70mph. Can I trade my Borla Hush catback for Whisper? ;)

Sold my Borla to a local for $350 (it has both flanges and was in excellent condition) and bought the Whisper CB for $650.
Took a loss, but now my wife will ride in the car again and it doesn't annoy me anymore.

Keep trying. If she didn't like the Prodrive, she is not going to like this.
She has to be the only person in the world that thinks the Prodrive oval tip is too loud.

No. They are about the same on the dB meter and from inside the car.

I hope to have a sound bite of the Whisper axleback soon. The first small round of Whipser axleback exhausts finally shipped to customers last week so a few others should be hitting the forum with their opinions. I need to circle back around to our local MA. customer that picked up on the very first one so see about getting a clip up here. As soon as I have it I'll get posted.

Yup, already called our hosting provider. Their doing maintenance on our server. They thought it would only be about an hour but looks like it's going to be done for a while this evening.

Hi Rich

Is this exhaust full 304 including the piping? I'm in Canada so they're kill us with the salt in the winter. I was thinking about this exhaust, but I'm worried about the pipes rusting through in a couple of years. (I have a full 304 exhaust on my other car (VW) and it has no signs of major rust even after 7 years)

Also how is the volume compared to the 3" system (I love the way that sounds). Is this much quiter?

Seperate question,
Is there any way of hooking up a 3" Whisper catback to the stock downpipe?

His website says to call him at 978-401-4624 for special ordering a Whisper to connect to the factory donut style gasket. They will give you a different intermediate pipe so it bolts right up.

digital-monk1 - The Whisper 2.5" Axleback is a combo of T304/T439. The tip and canister and flange are T304 while the S pipe into the canister is T439(which is a bit higher grade than 409). I live in MA. so I know exactly where your coming from. From my experience selling Stromung for the past 3.5 years(all T439 product), T439 will gain some surface rust but won't rust through. At least not after serveral years of use. Also the T439 used in the S pipe is rather thick compared to some of the T304 systems I have seen.

All 3" Whispers have been full T304 end to end, but due to the T304 going through the roof(price), in particular for US manufactured exhausts(like the Whisper is) we're going to due a run of T439 3" Whispers with a slightly lower price than what is listed right now. We ship about 65% of our product to the west coast where T304 vs. T439 is pretty much a moot point, so these folks will appreciate a lower cost 3" Whisper. We're trying to cater to everyones needs. Back to the T439. I have an early MadDad "Halfback" pipe that is a couple years old at this point. This particular one was done in T439. It's been through 2 MA. winters and has some surface rust but nothing that won't dissapear with an SOS pad or SS polish. A thick gauge T439 will last you the life of your car in my opinion.

In regard to something that will mate to your "donut" gasket factory downpipe or anyother "donut" gasket type downpipe cperkins is correct in that we can provide you with a "donut" gasket based intermediate pipe. That pipe will not include the flex section as it doesn't require it.

Thanks for the quick reply as always Rich.

Time to start putting some money away for the exhaust.

Regarding the volume question. How much louder would the 3" be compared to the 2.5"
And which is closer to the Scoobysport in sound/volume? Whisper 2.5 or 3?

Thanks

The 3" Whisper catback is closer overall to the volume of a ScoobySport 2.5" catback. I recently switch my car back to our 3" Stealthback with a 2.5" Whisper capping it off at the end and the volume drop was enough to be noticed without having to get out a db meter. Sound character though is the same with the 2.5" Whisper.

IMO, Whisper is one of the best exhaust you can buy which sounds close to OEM.

There is no annoying droning on a highway which has been my number one complain with Borla Hush. I sold Hush to get Whisper. ;)
