95 cluster is mech i believe. my cluster from the sti is digital 98. i have the 98 wiring harness installed, and want the 95 dash since its new. i'd like to house the 98 cluster inside the old 95 dash if possible. can i cut the bezel and make a holder of sorts to seat it properly and make it look right without big gaps? thanks! -keith

Actually, the way the 1998 (or JDM Ver 4) is wired, Converting to electronic is very very easy. With the 1997 and Older impreza clusters, the speed sensor is actually the speedo gauge itself. The cable spins the speedo head, and the speedo calculates the speed based on how many times the cable spins. That signal is then transmitted to the ECU, and other various components from the signal wire that comes out of the speedo. On the 1998 (or JDM Ver 4) cluster, they use a 2 wire speed sensor. The speed sensor sends an alternating pulse / current to the cluster, and the cluster decodes it and outputs a signal in the same way that the mechanical speedo does, and sends the signal out to the other various equipment that needs a speed sensor signal.

When they went to the 3 wire speed sensor in 1999 (I believe it was '99 anyways) all of the calculating was done in the speed sensor itself. They sent power and ground to the actual sensor, and the sensor outputted a signal which went to the cluster, Ecu, abs, airbags, dccd, and whatever else needed a speed sensor signal, straight from the speed sensor.

Basically, what i was saying is it's not hard at all to add the 2 wire speed sensor if you've got the mechanical speed sensor to begin with. Just entails running those two wires straight into the cluster instead of the cable
