I just finished a 34 hour drive from Calgary to Toronto. Good news: no speeding tickets, bad news: car trouble.

So, somewhere near Thunder Bay I was traveling up a steep hill and pulled out to pass a slow-moving truck. I downshifted into 4th, released the clutch, and got on the gas. Only, there was no response, the tach went up to 7,000, but the car was still in gear. Then I smelled something burning (I assumed my clutch had fried, although I wasn't 100% about the smell). The car worked fine under 3,000 RPMs, anything higher and it would just rev. The car was also really shaky at low RPM's. At 2,000 in 2nd gear it would shake like it was going to stall. Luckily it was all highway so I managed to baby it in 5th.

Later on I noticed that my gauges were off. My speedometer only ranged between 80 and 100 km/h and my tach never went above 3K. Now I assumed that something must have fried electronically, which would also explain the burning smell. Maybe a throttle position sensor?

Near Sudbury I stopped to get gas. When I turned the car back on everything seemed fine. Gauges worked perfectly and the car no longer shuddered at low RPMs.

Obviously something was physically damaged (hence the burning smell), but I have no idea what. The car is running normal now, although the tires seem a lot louder. I really have no idea what happened. Any ideas?

It sounds like your clutch was pretty cooked. Does it still slip?

Thunder Bay, eh? Lots of bugs, and very little else;). I used to work with a guy from Thunder Bay(another Finn, go figure-in Canada;) ), and he told me about the Thunder Bay summers.

Yeah, the clutch is definitely gone. I'm chalking up the electrical problem to a grounding fault. :(

Thunder Bay is definitely not my friend.
