Sorry for being an idiot but i need this answered. I posted in the old school forum but no one is there. :D which doesnt help. Ok, i got a 88 gl wagon 1.8 non turbo. my belts broke and had to replace them, there are 2. not the timiming belt. ok. I have the belt around the alternator, power steering pump, waterpump, and crank. The car runs and seems fine. Now the other belt is for ac, idiler, and waterpump. No i know the car will run fine without ac but what about the idiler pully? what does the idiler pully do? Do i need that or can i drive without it? thanks.

You can totally drive without it! The idler is just there to take up slack in the belts and provide a place to perform adjustments.

You obviously can't do without that.
The idler pulley is just basically a guide pulley to get better wrap of the belt around the AC pulley. It doesn't need to be turned.
It is probably different, but on EJ series engines, the water pump is driven off the timing belt.
