View Full Version : AP Users: Before and After Fuel Economy?
f4phantomii 04-20-2006, 02:53 PM I'm now seriously considering getting an AccessPort. One of the justifications I'm making to myself is that it may increase my fuel economy by 1-2mpg.
So based on current fuel costs and the amount of gas I may save, it would pay for itself in approximately 5 years.
So I'm curious to know how using an AccessPort has affected others fuel economy after the initial "fun factor" has worn off and you started driving normally again.

AlxSti 04-20-2006, 02:55 PM Haha.. you and I both are trying to justify buying that thing. You know it comes with an economy mode too, right? Which could help out another 2 or 3mpg.
Vashed 04-20-2006, 02:56 PM Economy mode is no fun. :|
Get a protune, they'll lean it out even further for you...
Thumper23 04-20-2006, 03:02 PM Nope, haven't noticed a change.
shemoves 04-20-2006, 03:09 PM It is about the same as stock. Things to keep in mind though, the fun factor has not worn off yet, and I've had it for quite a while now. Second, I am achieving the same mpg, but with 70 more horse and torque than stock (streetTuner) :D
I would imagine that a properly tuned (get it protuned) car would see better gas mileage than stock if it were driven conservatively.
lmbmusic 04-20-2006, 03:27 PM i have went from about 20 MPG to about 22-23 MPG, dont know if thats just the summer gas or the AP but both happened around the same time i believe. However with my STi, the power gains are NOT that noticable. All i have noticed is the smoothness and more pull at higher gears/RPMS. Buts its not like drasticly a new car. I have yet to get a protune. But i vote +1 for MPG increase
th3w0rm 04-20-2006, 03:35 PM I get 1 or 2 mpg better if I can keep my foot out of it. :(
antny 04-20-2006, 05:13 PM I just drove from southern Oklahoma to Tucson Az and back and I averaged 23MPG on the highway cruising at an average of 80-85 mph. I dont know what it was before but I am on the 91 octane VF30 map
Hank3 04-20-2006, 05:15 PM Pre AP: ~21-22 MPG
Currently w/AP Stage Two: ~24-25 MPG
I'll get to about 330 before the gas light comes on. Every mile counts with gas at astronomic prices...
nate49509 04-20-2006, 05:39 PM I noticed an increase in gas mileage, but since the reflash we've also started getting summer gas.
WRX03 04-20-2006, 05:40 PM You don't have an answer for me. Better highway, worse city.
Don't know yet still on first tank of gas with new AccessPort :)
-Kevlar- 04-20-2006, 05:58 PM stock i never got over 320 miles on a tank.... now if i dont get on it a lot i get roughly 340...
rimuladas 04-20-2006, 06:25 PM I didnt buy the STI for gas mileage.
CynicX 04-20-2006, 06:34 PM It will take 100k miles to make up for in gas what you spend on the AP.
You'd be better off telling yourself you need the increase in power for safety reasons. IE. merging onto the highway, pulling onto busy streets etc etc. God knows what would have happened if you didnt have that extra 25HP, you could have been killed or worse!!!
:)
EagleRockWrex 04-20-2006, 07:07 PM mpg went from okay to garbage
darksands 04-20-2006, 07:17 PM more power = more gas... but mine has stayed consistant. Even with a bigger turbo.
Gfunk720 04-20-2006, 07:21 PM Havent noticed a real decrease in MPG, but have never run the economy map.
Mine stayed about 340-360 around town driving with occasional spirited driving. Its nice to have the extra power though, especially on the low end. I definetely find myself on the gas pedal less than I used to...
Erexxx 04-20-2006, 08:06 PM Havent noticed a real decrease in MPG, but have never run the economy map.

Holy crap! 340-360 per tank?! I've been getting a max of 260-280 per tank with my AP!
hornyturbo 04-20-2006, 11:36 PM i dont even think i get 250 but i have a heavy foot and always in boost
kg2128 04-21-2006, 09:05 AM It only went up like .3 mpg, but this was me with a heavy foot partly driving quickly to "test it out." I have a feeling it will increase fuel economy 1 or 2 mpg if i drove exactly like I did before, of course thats harder to do now...
JCampbell 04-21-2006, 02:42 PM I don't know my pre-AP mileage but over ~3 years I know that I get less than 2mpg better with the economy map.
average 22.39 on economy map
average 21.3 running any of the stage maps.
I can email you my spreadsheet if you're interested.
subieworx 04-21-2006, 02:48 PM Economy map is only good for removing the fun from the car.
gas mileage is no longer a concern since I only drive the car on Fridays now. The Spyder gets 35mpg mixed driving with me revving to at least 5 k before a shift.
Mine went from about 18mpg city to ahve 21 or so. I get about 24 highway. I get about 9 at the track :D
Beebs99 04-21-2006, 03:20 PM You don't have an answer for me. Better highway, worse city.
Same here...
