My mom got smart and called the insurance company before getting the WRX. Anyway, they said it's $1171 for half a year. The other car (99 Accord V6) would be $505 for half a year. Is the insurance for the WRX too high? I'm a 19 y/o with a perfect driving record, no tickets. I am kinda pissed now cuz the posiblity of getting the WRX is not 100% now. What's you opinion on the price. Response would be appreciated. THanks.

HALF a year? Uhhh... if you didn't make a typo, YES, that's VERY wrong.

I'm 23 with a perfect driving record. If I'm not mistaken, your insurance "trial period" is up after 3 years. My insurance dropped when I turned 19. I just got my WRX, and I haven't had a chance to up my deductible to $500 yet, like I want to... but mine is $1167/year, with a "first accident forgiven" clause.

Yea, it's $1171 for 6 months. Wow, your insurance is so cheap.

That's a lot for 6mths.

A whole bunch of things affect insurance, i think.
Including where you live(varies within a city as well), type of car, how long you have been driving, your insurance deductible, your driving record, your age, marital status, etc

It depends on a lot of factors, one of which is the state you live in. New York has one of the highest rates in the country, and I pay $1411 for six months. I'm 26, no speeding tickets in the last 3 years and I even took a definsive driving course just to lower it from $1529.

My cousin is 23 and bought a 330ci, Gieco gave him a quote of around $2400 for six months. He had to go with a different company just so he could get it.

Holy Crap! Where do you guys live! I got a few quotes for insurance on a WRX and it was like 1400 for 6 months. I'm 22 with no accedents, 1 ticket (would that make the insurance sky high?). Whats a good company that is cheap and doesn't jerk you around if something happens to your car? $230/mo is **** load for insurance...

my insurance is about 1.2k 6 months, im 20 perfect record

so i dont think that is alot...my friends they have like 93 and 94 GS-R and they are around the same too so i dont think its to much

what area are you in im in CA, LA area so that could make a difference

but insurance goes down after 1 year if you take car of the car well and it depends on your grades as well...i think my insurance offers $300 off if you get 3.0 gpa or above...check into those things they help you out alot.

also the 3 year good driver thing helps alot too.

is there something wrong with my insurance?? anyone??

Well, you didn't really give us enough info. Is your Mom insuring it? Can she get a multi-car, or renters/homeowners insurance discount? Where do you live? Etc.

I know for one thing it's not just your age and the car that decides on the prices. Little things like having a car alarm and telling the insurance company your car will be 'in a garage' makes the rates go down. I know my dad currently has 5 cars 'in his garage' :P So, maybe you were quoted a base price? I heard your rates don't actually drop until you are 23 or 25, however...not 19 (3 years). Not sure on that one.

Perhaps this insurance company is the only one who knows what the WRX really is (not just the average 4 door sedan). ;)

My insurance is like 1100 a year...I'm 27 with no accidents or tickets. The car has an alarm and is considered 'in the garage' I also live in a very safe area.

Shrug...My gf would have to pay like 225/month for any car over 15k pretty much. She's checked. She has 1 accident (wasn't her fault) and 1 ticket and she's 23. She also lives in a more shady area, however.

Kinda sucks for her :(

I got 2 cars under my name and I pay 1k/6 months now. It was $600/6 month last 6 months. My local insurance company says thank you to all the crashed WRX's.

I pay 1300/6 months for my 2000 RS. A lot depends on where you live. I'm 23 with no points or accidents on my license. That is the best quote I got from the couple insurance companies I looked into.

All of these numbers being thrown around are fairly useless since we don't know if valid comparisons are being made. Someone can buy a 15/25k bare minimum liability policy, and they will be paying a lot less than someone with higher policy limits. Someone who has multiple cars on one policy gets a discount. Someone who has had the same insurance company for several years gets a discount.. etc.

Here is another thread which gives some good comparison numbers for the cost of insuring a WRX:

http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99023

This compares the cost of insuring a WRX by the same person with the same record vs. other vehicles.

There are a lot of statistical facts that are taken into account by insurance companies when rating a policy. Some are general in nature, such as age, sex, etc., and some are more specific to the driver, such as driving record. As far as where you live, each state has geographical rating territories which are set by ISO (Insurance Services Office) and are approved by each individual state. ISO also also assigns a rating symbol to each vehicle based on price, performance and other factors, so in essence all companies treat a specific vehicle equally. Also, you should be aware that most insurance companies exchange loss and operator information with each other through different reports (CLUE, UDI), so they can all find out what losses you had and who else has a license at your address.

The only way for you to answer to answer the question; "Is $1,171 for 6 months too much?" is to shop around, because then you'll be able to compare it to what's available to you, in your specific situation. BTW, I have come accross a lot of people in NJ paying around $10,000 per year for an "average" car. i.e. (Honda Civic 4 door, Hyundai Excel, Toyota Corolla, etc.)

As others have pointed out, insurance rates seem to depend on countless factors. The insurance rate of my previous car dropped by almost 50% when I moved from an average to a nicer neighborhood in the same town. Insurance on my new WRX is more than it was for a 98 Firebird, which surprised me. My insurance agent told me that this was mainly because it's a newer and more expensive vehicle. They rate the WRX as "Performance I", I think the "I" stands for Intermediate.

One thing that I would recommend: Use a good independent insurance agent! My agent finds me rates that are way lower than anything I get from insurances directly. The online quoting service of Geico gave me an amount that was almost 50% higher than what I'm paying, and others are much more.

The only thing I would add is that some companies also consider credit scores in determining what rate tier to put you in.

Wow, that seems way out there. I have three cars and the baru, and it is like $1400.00 p/y. I have had GREAT service out of Geico.

You are considered high risk/less then 3 years driving.
6 months huh,I guess thats from geico?
There not as cheap as they where as when they first started!
Try an other Ins. co,but It may only be a little bit cheaper.

Good Luck!

Along with McDade, I also live in Jersey, the worst freakin state to insure a car. I pay $3000 for the year. I have some points on my license, but the insurance company isn't tagging for them cause I've been with them for a couple of years. If I had to go to another agency, I'd get screwed because of the points.

As for insurance....anything over a $1000 every six month is rediculous. I would go back to driving my 85 toyota pick-up for if I had to pay that on my new WRX. I am 24, married. Several tickets, none in the last year though. Two accidents, neither my fault. Had the same policy since I was sixteen. And I have a a multi-line discount. My insurance is $571 every six months for full coverage $300k bodily injury, $100k property damage and a $100 comprehensive deductable. Oh and I have State Farm and live in st. louis.

I really feel sorry for those east coast ppl. I hear their rates are outrageous.

NJ is going to be even worse when one of the largest car insurance company, forgot the name, I think State Farm, is pulling out of NJ. That may mean higher rates since there is less competition and alot of uninsured drivers. If they got rid of the tolls on the Garden State Parkway then that would prevent less accidents and traffic since many drive like morons cutting across 5 lanes to get to the toll. Most of the accidents I see in traffic on the GSP except for a few overturned cars occassionally.

Well...

I live in South Florida in the Miami metropolitan area. I am 24, single, no tickets in almost five years (all out of state) not a homeowner, and have State Farm as my carrier. I think I've got 25/50k coverage with a $500 deductable. I do have a multi car discount because of my '86 Subaru Brat.

I'm paying about $1700 a year. Not bad, but not the best. Getting a WRX was out of the question. I can afford the monthly payments, but refuse to pay more than $200 per month just for insurance. I'll be 25 in two months---the same time my policy renews, so I'm going to add additional coverage and see about lowering my deductable if at all possible.

Honestly, I'd wait for the WRX. Sure its a great car, but you'll be in the poorhouse forever.

Age, location, whether the car is garaged or out on the street, your driving record, whether you smoke, etc., are all added in to calculate your premium.

I have read elsewhere on i-club that the WRX sedan is classified as a sports car whereas the WRX wagon is classified as a wagon (i.e., not a sports wagon). If you are a young driver and are considering a WRX, you might want to look at the wagon and see what difference, if any, it makes to your premiums.

Just a thought.

David

PS - I'm 35, drive a WRX Sedan, and pay approximately $1,000 a year for insurance, with a $500 deductible.

I'm 33 y.o. and my last speeding ticket was about 16 years ago (I had 3 total and my license was suspended for six months). I currently pay about $300 every 6 months. Oh yeah, I've had 3 accidents, too. All this before the age of 17.

I got my WRX and my insurance is about $400 bucks for six months. Im 29 lost all my points, 3 speeding tickets and my license removed for 6 months. Its high becasues its 4wd. I thought this would be a good thing when to cam to safety. I did get a break on a alarm and side air bags..

depends on where you live, but considering your age, your going to be screwed until you 26 anyway becasue your more statistically inclined to F* up. Nothing you can do but deal with it.

I live in Ohio, 24, no accidents/tickets on record(one accident like 4 years ago, wasn't my fault, they said it didn't affect my rate).

'01 Impreza 2.5RS
$1250 a year. Includes enhanced theft coverage(up to $2500) on stereo equipment and anything else in the car).
Medical on others up to $100K(was only $40 a year to upgrade from $50K).
Basic liability up to $75K.

My deductible for comprehensive is $50. Deductible for collision is $250.

I did just get a ticket(about 21 over). My agent said it'll increase my rate by $170 on my next six month period, but it'll drop more than that, since I turn 25 right before the next period.
