View Full Version : Widest Tire Possible
Sneeky Pete 04-25-2006, 07:31 AM Im sorry for not better searching for my awnswer,as Im extremely crunched for time on this one...Please understand..Thanks :(
I had a blowout last night, while changing to a spare I relized any of the other 3 could go at anytime.Im a nightly courier and need my car fixxed and ready by tonight, which means Ill need to be purchacing tires by about 1 p.m. (CST)
05 Impreza RS2.5 w/ Stock 16" alloys, stock ride height 195/55/16's I beleive is stock....
I need to know what the widest tire I can fit on the rim without rubbing struts or well wells is?One day a week my load is a little heavier than normal, and I do sag just a lil bit, which gives the rear about an inch drop, keep that in mind.
Thanks for the understanding and speedy reply's in advance.I need to sleep, and thats why I dont have time to research this further.Im really hoping my Subby brotherhood can come through..Thanks!
VpointVick 04-25-2006, 07:47 AM I'm not sure how wide the RS rim is, so it's hard to really answer your question.
I'd guess that you would be fine putting the stock WRX size on there though, 205/55/16. A little wider than stock for you, shouldn't have any rub worries.
Some guys shoehorn 225's, in a 45 or 50 profile, onto their 6.5" WRX stockers, but I've heard that turn in performance suffers due to sidewall flex.
ommmjido 04-25-2006, 07:58 AM 225/50/16
Sneeky Pete 04-25-2006, 12:28 PM Thanks Vpoint,Ya I've allready burned up a set of 205's they weren't that noticable though.....I do beleive the RS rims are the same as the wrx rims
225/50/16
Thanks man.....Thanks everyone, and thankyou for understanding my need to ask an unresearched question, alot going on right now,Im glad being tormented wasn't one of them...Goodday!

I've heard this enough to make me decide against running this size on my wagon.
I'll be running 215/50/16's.
Sneeky Pete 04-25-2006, 03:52 PM How doas a lower profile tire have more flex? Im not doubting it,I just dont understand it,the lower profile gives less sidewall to flex on,There for reducing tire roll.Less side wall to roll on means better handling....Right?
And dammit,I wish I was putting these on my wagon. :( ..I wish I bought a wagon...
and to clearify what I was saying about the rims being the same...I beleive I have the same rims that were on the 04 model WRX..
VpointVick 04-25-2006, 04:05 PM It's not so much an issue of profile as treadwidth versus rim width.
A 225 is the absolute widest tire recommended for a 6.5" rim. Sure, it goes on, but the sidewall ends up being stretched like,
/_____\
When you turn in to a corner the tread grips, but the car still wants to keep going the direction it was going. All that overlap allows the tire to do one of these,
/_____l, or, if you're turning the other direction, l_____\
The extra time that it takes for that slack in the side wall to be taken up makes the car feel very sluggish and slow to react.
Is that any help?
edit: Ideally the tire should look like this, (____)
Uncle Scotty 04-25-2006, 05:35 PM ....I would save my $$$ and get a set of 17x8's and put 235/40's on 'em and be done with it
AshyLarry 04-25-2006, 06:00 PM I have 225/50/16 Azenis 615 on my stockers. They work ok, haven't had a chance to test it out yet, auto-x is in 2 weeks, but Azenis have very stiff sidewall so I'm hoping performance won't suffer.

and thats before taking into account the different section widths that will vary from tire to tire in the same exact size.
you will really stress the bead with the above example as section width increases, and the handling like vick stated.
Sneeky Pete 04-26-2006, 01:39 AM Well,I wish I had read this about 6 hours earlier...Im paying bigtime now...In the process of monuting my new 225/50/16's,I tore a bead on the third one, detroyed the tire..On the forth one I broke the dang machine...Wound up taking it to to a buddies dealer that was open till 12..On the way,I blew the tire that I messed up the bead on,while on a spare "my dumb fault, should have known it wouldn't hold under the heat.....So after all the drama of running to the buddies, finishing the tire, we couldn't even drive it home on all four new tires.Still on a spare....Have to buy a new tire in the morning, and pay to have it mounted..I should have just payed the 50 to have them mounted...Sometimes,commen sense isn't so commen. To top it all of,I think I have a slow leak on the first one....Im off to wallow in my stupiity....night guys,Thanks again
Sneeky Pete 04-27-2006, 05:24 PM UPDATE:
--I had the tire I mauled up replaced yesterday, ran me about 88 bucks. The rest of the tires held fine.Come to find out this morning,When my brother replaced the chuck we broke on the tire machine,Its a 60 seires profile minuimum..Self Ownage Rules!..
--I purchaced 4 "5 lol" 225/50/16's Fuzion ZRi W92's...This was the cheapest performance tire they had available at firestone. My wholesale carryout price on the first four was $289 (Tax Excempt).
--I know the line "cheapest performance tire" is kinda an oximoron. As a nightly courier,my route is very consistante, long curvy empty roads, about a 100 miles nightly. I use this as time get down and drive hard..after all times money right.. ;) ,In doing this,I burn off tires about every 3-4 months (2 sets in 32k in 9 months ) From what I hear,The other drivers burn through theirs in a simialer fashion and I get the pleasure of hittin 90 degree corners in the 30's..
--This consistancy in my route allows me to test my tires in every weather condition 7 days a weak and determane tire wear, roll, rub, the whole 9 yards. The stockers, well sucked, burned them in 11k.My second set was a set of 205/55/16 Hancook Optimo plus II's (60k tire's).They weren't too bad,and lasted about 20k,but still had alot of bounce, roll and overrsteer.Im still running stock (negitive) camber, and if I would fix that, they might have lasted a bit longer. But for a non performance all season wasn't bad.
--Upon my first night of rolling on these skins,Im a changed man,My RS is a changed beast. The tires look great first off,but the handeling is just amazing.I thought the hancooks brought out some hidin capibility,These things are great. I love the wide steering feal as well, less bounce next to zero tire roll and alot less oversteer. I can't make any calls on longevity yet,as it's only been one night, but Ill keep ya posted.
--Vpoint..The tire's don't seem to have a /__\ ,look, it's more of a (__),and well from moving up the tire chane,It's alot better than before.Granted the tire's are like apples and ornges..But at the rate I burn through tire's,Ill give the 215's a shot next time, and let ya'll know my opinion on them as well.
--Sorry for the book, but I figured I make this threadworthy atleast :)
