View Full Version : What power differential can I expect from a protune?

I have a stage 2 setup with uppiep all the way back being Scoobysport. I have an STI intercooler and Perrin Short ram. I was looking at keeping the stock turbo for my mostly in city driving, so like the spoolup of my setup, but have been kicking around the idea of getting a protune instead of just using the cobb stage 2 off the shelf map.

probably 20-35 hp more than OTS....

That's all that I would be looking for. Driveability has to be maintained, but I'm looking at doing it for 91 octane.

1-something

some cars like the OTS map and you dont get a big difference and then some dont like it then you get a nice gain

i would say drivability would be better than something off the shelf.... and +1^^^^

I didn't gain much HP, but its the area under the curve that counts. I am making 230+ FPT by 2700 RPM and it stays flat till well past 5000 and is usable till deep into the 6000 range.

The problem w/ a protune is that it's setup for that day and that temperature, and that pressure. The OTS from Cobb is setup for a general driving experience accross the country, in order to provide substantial results w/o sacrificing drivability to certain areas of the country.

Even in Tx, w/ a protune, it would be recommended to have a different one say for dry air Lubbock and humid Houston. though in DFW, there is a blend. And then you factor in the seasons, or day and night sometimes.

That's just my take on a custom protune.

My protune turned our well worth it. With OTS stage 2 map i pulled 208WHP and 208WTQ on the dyno. After the tune the number went to 225 and 236 respectively.
I love it. :-D

you may actually get improvements in your driveability as well, since the map is tuned and optimised for your car.

Seems like the ECU can adapt to all of those input changes. That's the point of all those sensors....

lol!

Cobb's maps (and other OTS maps) are generic maps that not deisgned to run on any one particular car. As a result, performance can be a little on the lacking side on some cars, and on the dangerous side for other cars.

With a protune, the map is customised to take into account any odd quirks that your car might have and others don't have, or quirks that other cars might have and your car does not have. They even take into account the quality of gas and climate that is available in the area. They are the safest way to go for any car.

For stage 2 car, peak power difference isn't going to be much, but it's power gains in other RPMs that will be noticeable.

mods at the time of the PROtune:
SPearco TMIC
injen uppipe, xover pipe & short ram
Cobb TBE w/hi flow
also, i was spiking to 20+ PSI boost before the ProTune, i think i settled on 17 psi or something for the ProTune.

good gains between 3-5.5k rpm.

You'll probably get more HP if you learn how to post in the right forum. :furious:
