View Full Version : Value of borked JDM v7 6mt trans
gpatmac 04-27-2006, 12:52 AM I already know I'm going to take a huge loss, but in an attempt to recoup any funds at all out of it in order to replace it, I'd hate to take the bare minimum that a junkyard would give me for 200lbs of scrap metal.
The over-the-phone diagnosis is that my bearings are cooked. My understanding is that to repair that issue would very easily be more than the cost of just buying a like replacement.
Thanks,
gimmewar 04-27-2006, 03:01 AM How did you blow it up?
Mike
petawabit 04-27-2006, 03:13 AM can't you put 5mt guts in the 6speed casing? I thought people it's been done before
gpatmac 04-27-2006, 08:38 AM The drain plug came out while I was driving on the highway. I stopped immediately, so it still works fine, but there's a rubbing noise and the input I've gotten from a couple of folks is that the bearings are burnt.

 No way, no how!

Sounds like your ready to ship it off to Andrewtech and have PPGs put in with a rebuild. (I know, quite an expensive option but its my dream tranny!)
Mad Ra88it 04-27-2006, 07:04 PM I'd buy it if shipping wasnt too bad.
I have a trans shop checking over my FXt trans, and at the rate I'm going, i might as well have a spare.
PM me for details.

I am ready but financially, I don't think it's viable for me at this time. I'm at the 'gathering data' stage in order to make a solid decision, so I'm open to listening to/reading/hearing anything so I can filter it all later.
WRXINTX 04-28-2006, 11:38 AM if it is just bearings and nothing else.... just buy the dang parts and do it yourself!!!!
I know it sounds too simple, but if you can get a few of the proper tools, and check clearances on surfaces for extreme wear and look for any possible heat fatigue that may have occured......
as long as none of the hardened parts got overheated or galled, I would say that you could replace the bearings and any other small wear items for less than $300 total....
heckuva lot cheaper than a new or used one costs......
Buy a service manual for your model of car from SUBARU or look for the PDF file online that contains the MT info for an STI..... the gear ratios is the only real difference...
I think you may not be nearly as bad off as you think you are....
GOOD LUCK AND DON'T GIVE UP!!!

HndaTch627 04-28-2006, 02:17 PM FWIW ther'es not many people who have the socket to tighten the mainshaft nut to 298FT LBs
WRXINTX 04-28-2006, 02:20 PM buy the right tools from screwbaroo if you have to.... if you are an enthusiast, you will most likely be doing more work in the future and besides, you may learn to work on others trannies also!!!
can't break it worse than it already is .....

gpatmac 04-28-2006, 02:31 PM RYNO,
I've got a thread in the 2.5 forum that details about 14 months of my trials of rebuilding my engine. It wasn't hard, but due to various [excuses], it nearly did me in.
I think my next job as college student pt.2 will be much more accomodating with regards to available time, but I'm not done with this job until mid-August.
Hondatech, you're absolutely right but I'm sure I could find somebody around this town who'd have something.
Like I said. At this point, I'm just weighing options.
Off the top of my head, the factors (although I haven't applied any weights to them) I'm using are: Would this option get my car fixed sooner? Would this option give me the peace of mind that the tranny is indeed strong enough? Would this option be the best benefit per dollar? Would this option suit my needs (I want it mainly for autox/hpde's, but I'd also like to be able to drag race and not worry.)
Options: Sell it outright and buy a replacement (which, obviously, I can afford.) Have a professional fix it. Fix it myself. Put the car back to stock and sell it. Sell it outright.

have you talked to dylan yet at DS1, last week he said he was getting all the tools he needed to rebuild 6mt because he was tired of sending the gearsets out, the jaws for the vice to hold the set and the socket from subaru were almost $400 IIRC. I'm sure he'll be itching to "earn" some of that money back.
InfamousDX 04-28-2006, 04:13 PM Maybe sometimes you have to konw when you've put too much and call it quits... is it that time?

I've seen that torque wrench. It's like 3 feet long. Dont know how much it costs, but I'm sure if I found out, I'd be coughing up blood. :) Not something that Auto Zone loans out either. ;)

Right now, he is #1 of my 'course of action list' for rebuild and I've already decided to take it to him for diagnosis. Tremendously forthright dude.Maybe sometimes you have to konw when you've put too much and call it quits... is it that time?Well, yes and no. It's not so much that as it is the strain it's put on my marriage. I mean, if I did decide to sell it, I'm just going to replace it with a $1k car for autox.
