Any thoughts? Will a baja turbo hood work for this application? (A search indicates that it might...)

We're basically swapping a stock USDM STi EJ25 + drivetrain into a 98 legacy chassis and need a hood to work with the TMIC. We're not really interesting in going FMIC, as we don't want the lag and aren't likely to swap to a larger turbo anytime soon.

But on this thread (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=503965&highlight=legacy+hood) someone said it didn't fit well. But nothing has been said about this year car and this specific application.

I'll have to look again, but the small scoop a) doesn't look functional b) doesn't look like it lines up properly with the TMIC. But I'll check again when I head over to his place this week.

the turbo baja hood doesnt fit right i i recall. you can make the stock hood functional but i'm not sure it flows enough air for the TMIC.

The opening on the Baja isnt much more the the gt hood i thouht. anyways doesnt the baja work of the BE not BD?

I have a BD hood with '02-'03 STi scoop molded in for sale. $250 + shipping. :)

If you are staying stock or near stock, the GT hood should work. I know Kraziken has been running his STi with a stock scoop, also xcntrk75 has been running a stock scoop with his 300whp beast. I as well am running a stock scoop, but have no real experience to back it up. We will see this summer. They may be looking for larger scoops as the power levels increase, I know the issue has been brought up on the board previously.

There is a bit of the intercooler that sticks past the front of the opening if you only remove portions of the scoop by unbolting the blockout. I want to to a little fab work right up against the edge and turn the hood down to make a seal on the intercooler, and fasten a piece in the rear and on the sides to create a seal around the face of the intercooler The stock scoop also allows for a small chimney on the one side if you should so choose to pipe to.

I think the cooling has been fine. I've lifted the hood, touched the intercooler after a few runs.

It could be an issue if you push more boost. I have the I/C spray that turns on after 8psi of boost currently to keep things cool.

I was thinking of an STI swap into my 1g legacy.

If your talking about a USDM STI swap. (and just the engine swap, nothing else).

Motor online ranges from $3500 to $6000 for the complete engine/wiring/ecu/turbo/intercooler.

Transmission rebuild, plus heavy duty clutch $1000 to $1500. If you go with the STI 6 speed and DCCD I think I've seen these in the $4500 range.

As for difficulty. The motor will mechanically connect just fine, it's the spaghetti mess of wiring and some other minor fabrication that is involved.

UTCiv and I are the only BD legacies I know of with this engine setup. He can comment on the difficulty of the swap. Or you can search for his build/swap thread for more information.

My wife was nice enough to let me buy all the parts. If I chose to work on the car instead of my project house, I'm not sure I'd be alive right now, so I paid to have it done. :lol:

My buddy got basically the full USDM STi drivetrain: Engine, tranny, axles, etc. He's doing brakes and a custom driveshaft. He also bought the car with 150,000 miles specifically for this project. He's doing the Cobb Full TBE, headers, Cobb SFI and a protune. With everything, including the car and a ProTUNE, he should come to about $18,000. I think the car was about $6-7,000 of that off ebay.

I figure it'd be a bit cheaper to just buy a whole totalled car and have everything there.

That way, you could just swap over the whole STI engine wiring harness and save alot of wiring.

Our next problem is deciding what to do about the dash/gauges. He has the DCCD so he'd like to use an STi gauge cluster, but we have no idea if there is anyway to make it work in the BD dash.

I think UTCiv swapped the STI gauge cluster over on his BD.

Does the STI dash show something in regards to the DCCD?

The 6 speed and DCCD is on my list of "future" upgrades.

The STI cluster is doable, but its a bit of work and a lot of faith to start hacking the $350 piece. I'll take some pics today of the finished product. There are a few bugs I have yet to work out to get some lights to go out, but the DCCD, speedo. tach, illumination, oil, fuel, CEL and most of the good stuff works. I'll try and take a video today.

Kraziken, yeah it has a pretty neat display for the manual mode, and an indicator of auto/manual.

From the looks of it, the STI cluster looks maybe just a bit taller? it looks like there might be some squeezing to get it to fit, but it looks good.

Where did you mount the roller/rocker switch?

BTW, I just picked up that Legacy hood with the 03 STI hood scoop. Somehow it looks better installed on the car. Than just sitting in the shop floor.

I definately want to see it, I bet it looks sweet! Right now I have the roller mounted on my passenger seat :lol: the Auto/Manual switch and the roller are going in the center console.

The cluster is a bit taller and the plugs extend from the top. I had to take all of the plastic and foam off of a spot dash in order to get the plug to clear.

I like it, looks like a good size for the car!

If you look at the pic, standing almost over the hood. You'll notice that the hood is a slight different shade of white.

My brother mentioned he would have never noticed it if I didn't say anything.

I have just the rear bumper that hasn't been painted on this car. It's a bit faded from sun damage I think. I'll probably get the rear bumper, hood and my JDM mirrors (on their way) all painted at the same time.

Both the scoop and the gauges look awesome. Hopefully my buddy can get them to work.

That hood is a single-stage PPG white IIRC. That hood was done separately from the rally car so I could be wrong.

I think that is what Mike mentioned.

The only thing that hasn't been repainted on my car now, is the rear bumper, which has some sun fade damage.

I think I'll probably get the hood repainted with the rear bumper and my JDM Mirrors.

^^Glad you jumped on that hood, was too good of a deal for a local with need to pass up ;)

It will fit, but as everyone has mentioned the smaller BD scoop is limiting on flow.
