i've got an overheating problem, and it looks as though i may need to replace my head gaskets. has anyone done this before, and how much $$$ did it run you? thanks.

I helped my friend change a head gasket on his 79' Subaru 4x4 wagon with the 1.6L engine. I'm sure for your car it's going to be a bit more expensive, but he spent less than $100 including new radiator hoses, fluid, oil, bolts, head gasket etc.

We used a winch to pull the engine up to about fender height so it could rest on the fender (it was a pile, the fender didn't matter). From there, my friend picked the engine up :eek: and carried it over to a table (oh, my back) When placing it back on the ground to hook to the winch he let me help him.

We borrowed a torque wrench from a mechanic friend and did all the work ourselves. Except for taking the head to a machine shop to have it shaved down/leveled. About a week later I think the other head gasket blew. We were young and broke so we didn't consider replacing both like we should have.

thanks aspen, anything helps as of this moment. my subie is hurting right now. but, i've got it in good hands with steve and don at suby specialties. unfortunately, they're closed sunday and monday. i've never been this long without my car. i was deeply saddened having to drive away in another car.

Yeah Steve and Don rule. www.subyspecialties.com is the place I go to to get my sube fixed and tuned. Anyways, good choice. Were you at the installfest last week? I heard they are going to carry STI parts soon.
