View Full Version : what car to get?
BamBooI 10-06-2001, 09:43 PM I might be getting a new car near the end of the year. Im looking toward a 2+2 coupe, or maybe a wrx sedan. I can afford no more then 25k. Currently my choices are... RSX Type S, Celica GTS, and a WRX. Seeing how this is an impreza forum I can understand it might be a little biased. I been seeing some bad things for wrxs as in noises from the car (ie from the awd) ,but I understand all cars can have defects. The car i want is going to be my daily dogger ( lol jk ) and i want it to be fast. So what do you think i should look to get? I already know the wrx is the fastest of the 3. Please tell me the pros and cons of these cars as well as put in another car do that you think is a good choice. BTW the wrx was released in 2k1 correct or was it 2000?
THanks later
BamBoo
Eric SS 10-06-2001, 09:54 PM The WRX was released in 2001 as a 2002 model. All the cars are good but the WRX is my favorite (obviously biased). It's a bit more of a sleeper and doesn't give you that racer boy image and since it has 4-doors, it is pretty practical. And who can not like the fact that it is turbocharged from the facory. It handles excelent being that it is AWD also :)
Eric
BamBooI 10-06-2001, 10:08 PM so the wrx has only been out for 1 year in the us??? I was told never buy a car that was released the same year... always wait a year... any of u guys have any trouble with your rides yet?
Eric SS 10-06-2001, 10:12 PM It was released in the US but the rest of the world got a 2001 Impreza so I guess you could say that you have already waited a year. This is the second year for the WRX, just the first for the USA

mr_disco 10-06-2001, 10:32 PM I suggest you try driving an AWD car if you haven't before. The difference is night and day vs. a FWD car. That alone commands a $4000 premium on a car (especially if you live in a wet/snow state). So compare the cars after figuring AWD to be worth $4000. WRX has far more HP, torque, and a turbo than the RSX or Celica, yet it's not more expensive.
Eric SS 10-06-2001, 10:58 PM I wouldn;t say that the WRX is more expensive than the Celica or RSX. All three cars are right in the mid $20's within $1,000 of each other
Eric
fanatic 10-06-2001, 11:06 PM get the wrx, much faster stock, and the aftermarket has gotten pretty big for it. plus, you'll have much more fun in the rain than the other two.

Who said it was more expensive? I said it wasn't more expensive yet it had a feature worth $4000 more.

There are no noises from the car or from AWD.
I don't think the AWD makes any noise.

Verist 10-07-2001, 01:47 AM This may be the 1st year for the car here in the states, but the engine, and most of the imoptant stuff has been out for years, I don't forsee any problems.

Hmm, I've never heard of any incidence of the AWD causing noises. People who don't have AWD tend to believe that the AWD will cause more problems than a regular FWD car, but Subaru's chassis is very trouble free and reliable.
Which is not to say Sube's don't have little problems, too, but I'll let WRX owners answer that one...
My suggestion is to test drive all three cars. I have a feeling you'll go the way of the WRX naturally.
Kostamojen 10-07-2001, 04:46 AM Go do some test driving!!!
BamBooI 10-07-2001, 08:58 AM hey thanks for all the input... i read about some thumping noise from the tranny on the wrx non technical board... some people are here thumping noises from the cars i think they are wrx owners.. have any of u guys had any problems with your wrx??
i was leaning toward the wrx in the begining anyways b/c my 2 friends both have mr2 turbos and i want something to keep up or smoke their ass HEHEHEHHEHE thanks for the input give me more :-) !!! any of u guys raced mr2 turbos before? 92-94
Skylab 10-07-2001, 12:21 PM Perhaps get a used 2.5RS. I've got a 2001 model, and all my friends seem to prefer it over the WRX. I do like the WRX, but my maine gripe is it has four doors, and visibility is poor over my left shoulder due to the pillar. I'd get a turbo wagon though.:D

JayREX 10-07-2001, 02:53 PM There's a really good article in the new Road and Track. They test the ten "most fun" cars for under 25k. It's not on the web site yet, well at least as of 2 pm 10/7. I think it will help you make a decision, or at least point you in a good diretion.
AWD is certainly a big factor, but I must admit the lack of torque until the turbo spools in the WRX makes me love my 2.5 RS-T more :)
Edit: I still say the WRX over those two.

stock for stock a WRX will kick the crap out of an MR2 turbo, I think when you start to mod them the WRX would still win but it would become close. The MR2 has one of the best engines Toyota has ever released, same as Celica GTFour and what's popular to put in Supras in Japan at the moment. The MR2 is really hard to drive quickly from what I hear though so that may be something to take into consideration. Honestly, I think if both your friends have them, it might be fun if you had one too and you can get a decent one for 10-12k I'd guess then have fun modding it. Just don't expect it to go anywhere during the winter. :)

Read some of the threads on the WRX forum. People are having noises that are coming from the drive train, and might very well be related to the AWD system. I have the whining noise when lifting off the throttle, and it's very disturbing. If I remember correctly, one of the current threads about it is titled "does your drivetrain make this noise?"
I'm having at least one other noise, too, but I think I just figured it out today. Seems to be a simple old fashioned glove box rattle, should be easy to fix.
The WRX is a great car, but unfortunately it does produce some unusual noises.
Dolphin Overton 10-07-2001, 09:04 PM There is a reason we are all biased. For $25k you can't find a better car than the WRX. C&D just compared it to an S4 and a 330Xi. The WRX beat the 330Xi and almost beat the S4. Those are $40k cars. The cars in the WRX's price range don't even come close to the WRX.
BamBooI 10-07-2001, 09:25 PM thanks for the input. now all i have to do is HOPE my parents get it for me!!! and not do me like they did last time, told me they were going to get me a gts celica....but i hope they dont mess with me this time so i can get something faster and it has a turbo!!!
Don't you mean they get you something safer and more practical? ;)

tatical 10-07-2001, 10:15 PM It will make the noise on demand. If I step hard (about 2/3 force) on the brakes to a full stop and then accelerate hard, I can hear a clicking sound (power transfer I guess). It sounds like I ran over an empty soda can or something (its more like a clicking sound though). It’s even louder now that it’s been lubed up  . It isn’t annoying though.

I think you should get an RS, and then spend your money making the car faster. That way you learn with the car, instead of the car teaching you...
Just my humble opinion.

VEGETA_GT 10-09-2001, 10:22 AM so the wrx has only been out for 1 year in the us???
Someone has already said its been out in other places for the modle 2001. Wrong, its been out for years over seas people. This year is a new gen of the car, but there should not be any issues. Its been proves quite a bit.
So if you ar looking for a classey, fun, fast, ride, in this price range, go WRX or go home :D
Also if you are looking for less pricey, RS and spend cash making it faster. Its got eh same body, and suspension as a WRX. And its a bigger engion then a WRX. So add a few things and you make the fast RS even faster.
:D
MELBA 10-09-2001, 10:50 AM Get the CELICA GT-S its only weighs 2500 pounds!!!!!! And it's quick as hell.
Get the RSX or the Celica they are much cooler cars than the WRX.
