Ive been searching for a few days now and I decided to ask: I know Cobb says nothing about an upipe being required for stage 2. All you need is turbo back but, ive been reading about several upipes "puking" into the turbo and ruining the turbo. Has anyone had this problem? Is it common and will i be safe with just a turbo back and stg. 2?

Well in time the cat within the up-pipe can tear apart and be sucked into the turbo. While I didn't have this problem, I went ahead and replaced the up-pipe anyway as it helps spool the turbo about 500 RPM quicker and since you have to take the downpipe off to replace it, just made since to do it all at once.

Having said that, just running the turboback with stage 2 and you will be safe. It could happen but you're probably going to be ok. Plenty of people do it all the time.

Uppipes are with in the stage2 perameters, you should go on to Cobbs site and look at the map note for the year of your car. The notes will tell you everthing you need to know.

thanks alot- I realize the ap stg2 has no problem with upipe. just wondering if im asking for a blown turbo with regular every driving and some spirited driving mixed in. Ive seen that 95% of people dont have a problem with stock upipe. i guess its just a freak thing. thanks alot

I understand that. Odds are you will be fine. It would be a while before that happens. That little ole turbo is only going to spool up so quick. :) You'll be fine. I just did it all at once rather than take that DP off again. :) Good luck

Turbo spools noticeably quicker, you gain a couple of hp ...and... no worries about the UP cat falling into the turbo. The UP install is a b*tch, though, at least it was for me.

i am in PA though and worried about emmisions. My dealer had no problem with cat back and as long as nothing really broke with a downpipe. i will still be taking it to the dealer for service. I just dont think in PA i will pass emmisions with 1 highflow cat in the dp.

No dealer will have problems with a catback BUT a full TBE, trust me they might have a problem with it. Esp since you're messing with the turbo. I don't know how they do emmissions there but here they hook up and look for CEL's. The AP will eliminate those so in that case you'll be fine.

I too have heard the theory of the uppipe cat breaking apart and destroying the turbo. It is possible that this can happen and I'm sure it has happened to someone out there. I personally have not ever read a thread from anyone that has actually had this happen. I think the odds of it happening are very, very low, especially if you only running Stage 2. You stated that you want to be safe with your car, so I assume you are not the kind of person that red lines every gear and "lives your life a quarter mile at a time". If my assessment is correct, then I believe the chances of it breaking apart on you are even lower. In summary, don't worry about it; you will be fine.

All that said, I still suggest replacing the uppipe, but for different reasons. You have to have the downpipe off to do it, which you are replacing with the turbo-back, and you will get quicker spool-up with the catless uppipe. You might as well do it all at the same time and save yourself the hassle of taking the downpipe off again when you decide to upgrade it in the future.

That's my $.02. Whichever route you take, you will not be dissapointed. Enjoy Stage 2. :)
