Ok, well they didn't go kaploo, but here's the story.

I got the cusco bushings but kept my stock shifter, just cut it down to feel like a short shifter, but to keep the easy shifting. So I put the bushings on. These were a biatch to get on, especially the outside one that the nut goes on after you put the plate back on. I didn't have torque specs, obviously because I didnt think it was necessary on something like this. I just tightened the nut back up as tight as I could with one hand, and not overly tight.

So I am driving on it for about 3 months. I took my car to the drags once, and beat on it numerous times. Everything still felt ok to me.

Just last night, I let my friend drive my car. He works at a dealership so he was going to give the the whole cleaning works. Claying, washing, waxing, etc. On his way back to my work to drop it off for me, that's when he freaked out. He shifted into second and the shifter dropped and you couldnt get it into second or 4th or reverse. The nut fell off and the lever popped off the bolt holding it on. Thank god we searched and found all the stuff laying in the middle of the intersection.

So my questions are: Has this happened to anyone else that has the cusco bushings? Does having the harder bushings, make more rattles under the car to make the nut keep unscrewing itself? Would you guys suggest I ditch it and go back to the stock bushing, or just keep checking the nut often, or having it air gunned on tight?

Thanks for the info. PS - My friend almost soiled his drawers when he thought my tranny went down the ****ter.

You just need to put Loctite on the threads before you put it back together. I know of at least 3 other people that this has happened to, and they didn't find the parts lying on the street either! So consider yourself lucky and Loctite that bolt on. :)

Has nothing to do with what bushings you put on, but with the factt that taking off that nut... they put something like loctite on it at the factory, and removing that nut breaks the locknut free- it can vibrate loose. Same thing happened to me, but I did not find the bits and pieces ;).

happened to me after a year of driving. The factory nut is a one-time-use lock-nut. If you reuse it you need to put some locktite on there

Yeah. What they said. Just use locktite or get a new nut.

Dang, thanks for the warning- I have not seen this mentioned on any of the other numerous short shift threads. Gonna buy some locktite tomorrow!
