on my way to work this morning the windshield cracked
on my impreza, i let my car warm up in the driveway
for at least 15 minutes with the defrost on, when i pulled
out on the road, i hear this click sound, only to look up
and see a line right along the bottom where the defroster
was hitting the windshield...
it was cold out at 7am (-7 degrees) but i have never had this
happen on a vehicle before,
think i got a defective windshield?
i think warranty better cover this...

that happened to me once.

I had a deep chip in the window in the center just above the dash.

there was snow on the windshield.. really cold day.
I I had gone for a short drive, as I was pulling into the parking spot I heard a loud crack..

the chip had spread from a few milimeters... to about 30" long.

was fun.

My windshield cracked Friday. I heard a "tick" sound hile on the freeway, but when I got of work there was a hairline crack that has started apparently from the stone chip that morning. I first saw it to be 6" long. It's slowly making its way across the windhield.

How much is a replacement winshield? Aftermarket or OE?

Mine just cracked also about eight inches across the right side of the windshield. I think the golf ball sized rock had something to do with it. Do you have to wait for the windshields like other parts?

Looks like there is a wait for windshields. From what I gather, there is no aftermarket winshield available at this time.

After the wait.. you'll still get the same POS windshield as installed from the factory.. my only real disappointment with this car..

It happened to me once sleeping in a 80's BMW 3-series in the winter. I was in an isolated area on the coast of NC and all the motels had closed for the winter. I was sleeping in the car and it got down to about 2-3 degrees C. that night. I was sleeping in the driver's seat and all the windows in the car were fogged up from my breathing. During the night the driver's window spontaneously shattered. It was loud as h*ll and scared the p*ss out of me. I was so sleepy that I dumbly touched the glass trying to figure what had happened and got glass everywhere (and cut my hand...) It was a long 4 hour drive home with the heat on and that window "open" the whole time, glad it wasn't raining.

So yes, automotive glass can break from temperature extremes, but it apparently is quite rare.

The warrenty will cover it as long as it will pass the "pencil" test. Mine cracked about a month ago and i am still waiting on the new windshield. I was driving down the road and it just cracked. It is a stress fracture.

Good luck

i had to put it through my insurance, my dealer laughed in
my face and said it was a stone chip that caused it....
:(

anyways $1600.00 (canadian) later
i have a new windshield in the car and am now
scared as hell to drive anywhere.

those transports kick up rocks like nobodys business, not
to mention how mine cracked randomly in the first place.

i am really pissed about all of this seeing as how my car is
just over 4 weeks old now...

Called for my new windshield today and they are on national back order, go figure. I think I am going to wait for an aftermarket one, if it would just stop cracking.

My father once had a windshield crack without getting hit by anything in a new Toyota after less than a week, so this can certainly happen with other cars. Should be a clear warranty case, this is obviously different from the windshield being hit by a rock.
