Holy cow....when I starter her up this morning(our first frost here in Maryland), all I heard from the engine was clickclickclickclick! Like there was oil starvation or something! Anyway, after 20 seconds, the oil was warmed up and soothed the engine.

I guess that's what happens with 0W-30 Mobil 1 oil if you don't run the engine for about 48 hours? Will there be a problem if I use 0W-30?

It says 10W-30. But I've always used 5W-30 til last month.

Subaru's just skittish about approving 0 weight oil. Synthetic 0w30 is about the best possible oil for cold starts. I noticed now that the nights are getting colder that the car is much noisier starting in the mornings.

Yes, I heard that's the best for these regions at this time of year. I live in Maryland, BTW. So no problem to expect, eh? GOOD! :D

I will stick with 5w30. I am sure that 0W30 is perfecty safe, but I think that 5w30 is thin enough for cold starts. After all, it never goes to 20 below. Heck, it rarely gets as low as 0 here. the 5w30 just gives me that feeling that things are both thin and thick enough for cold and hot engines. Mobil 1 all the way.

Yeah, I am running 10w30 mobil one synth, and it takes a second for the car to start.

I run 15w-50 but it is always 200 degrees in this desert :)

Several of us have noticed that the WRX engine seems to run a little rough if you leave it parked for a couple days. Once the engine warms, it smooths out. Perhaps it's the EJ20 grumbling at us for making her sit still for more than a day. ;)
On a more academic note, some have postulated that it's because of the mid-grade oil used at dealership oil changes. Personally I am going to use some good Mobil 1 or perhaps Royal Purple for my next change and see if that keeps the "grumbling" to a minimum.

I'll drive your car when you're not using it. That'll keep the engine nice and warm for ya! :D

You can call me...the WRX Day Care Driver! :p

not to sound like a prick, but if your owners manual recomends something, why would you (if you weren't sure otherwise) go w/ something different? I use 5w30 in the winter, and 10w30 in normal weather. The only reason why I change is the difference in seasons ... 0-40, and 60-90+, but for your less varried climate, I'm not sure why it would warrent a thinner cool temperature oil (0w30).

(sorry to come off like a prick, I'm just wondering why... maybe there is something I'm missing)
