The issue gets further clouded on 04+ due to the open/closed loop delay. As well, I'm skipping air/fuel controllers for the same reason. Wrong, that's a copout. Many aftermarket EM "solutions" are based entirely on those two issues. Boost Controllers (regardless of whether they're manual or electronic) and Fuel Controllers both should be addressed in any article that proclaims itself to be the Subaru "Engine Management FAQ."
For the first year the WRX was sold in the US, the only "EM" available was the DASTEK Unichip piggyback, which altered the MAF signal to "control" fueling and diddled with the crankshaft position sensor signal to "control" spark advance timing. And the Unichip isn't even mentioned in your FAQ? Both Vishnu and TurboXS offered Unichip "solutions."
