yes, that is the correct procedure. What you're looking for is the fans to kick on, which will let you know that the thermostat has opened. There should be a significant amount of air come out at that point. However, if you have an 02 WRX or any Subaru that doesn't have a cap on top of the radiator, there is a great liklihood that you will still get air trapped in there.
