Stock 1997 Legacy GT sedan.
I have been removing heat shields since I bought this car a few weeks ago. It has "almost" stopped rattling. I started with the first 2 shields on the header pipes directly out of the engine since they were clearly rusted loose. That helped but I still had a rattle under moderate acceleration. I continued removing the longer shields on the 2 pipes before entering the Y junction. I also removed the shield that covers the Y junction. Now most all rattles are gone except for the rare rattle under moderate acceleration under load.
I'm reluctant to remove the shields on the resonator and cat conv for 2 reasons.
1. Once I am able to undo the fasteners and drop the bottom shield, will I be able to slip the top shield out between the exhaust and the body ?
2. Will the absence of these shields allow excessive heat to come in close contact with the body ?
Has anyone removed these 2 shields without trouble or concequence ?
