Oh, yeah, that's true too, NPT fittings are not a straight thread. It's not really intended to be used on a plate of steel, but a pipe. The taper helps to seal it.
That's the way NPT threads ARE, Craftsman IS following the standard.
If you want it to be easier to thread, then you need someone to weld a bung somewhere, this should provide significantly more thread engagement, and a much easier tap job.
