Default Can't exceed 42000 rpms.

I have a 98 outback manual transmission with 165k on it. For some reason now I can't get it to accelerate past 42000 rpms. When it hits 4200 rpms it just won't go anymore it sounds like it revs a little higher but my acceleration tops out, and I have to shift into the next gear to continue accelerating. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in as far as I have messed with it. I also have problems with my car occasionally dying although this happens very rarely. Any suggestions on what this would be would be so helpful. Thanks so much.
