Have you tried the "gain" adjustment on the subwoofer? See the close-up picture in post #4 of the "Stock Head Unit" thread.

I don't really have any recommendations on after-market double-DIN head units. There just aren't nearly as many out there in that size.

You'll find more choices (and probably pay less) if you stick with single-DIN. You can splurge on a Subaru pocket (perhaps from another model) and it will still look stock. Some pockets even have a flip down door.
