I actually work at a Subaru dealership, and the reasoning behind this is simply that the VIN for your car contains the model code of the vehicle, as well as trim level, and different trim levels actually can have different specs. Also, being in the car business, you would be SHOCKED at the number of people who doen't know the correct year on their car, or even the actual model, engine size, etc etc... So, by collecting your VIN, the parts guys are actually streamlining the process, and therefore saving the hassle of returned parts for the wrong model and whatnot, which in turn makes everyone happy. Yeah...
