To the OP, you have to realize Synaptic3 are specialists and not just your shadetree mechanic. Unfortunately, they don't distinguish the bill rate b/w complicated fabrications and an oil change.
You may need to find multiple mechanics for different jobs. Nobody likes to pay $100 for an oil change but that doesn't require much qualifications to do also.
I'd like flat rates too but this is the nature of the business.
