All I know is that some tire manufacturers will recommend different rim widths for tires of the same width but different sidewall heights. For instance 235/45 17 S-03's are recommended for rims 7.5-9 inches wide while 235/40 17 S-03's are recommend for rims 8-9.5 inches wide
