IMO if you want to boost it, go with the brand new sti shortblock from the factory. Like Scooby Soldier said, the block comes assembled with internals right out of the box.
As for heads, be on the lookout for sti heads that need fixing (like they have a bent or dropped valve) and have the 3 angle valve job with springs/retainers done.
Once all is said and done, you can sell your longblock and drivetrain setup and recover some of the cash.
I'm in the middle of an sti swap right now into my 03 wrx wagon. It ends up being quite expensive... I mean once you have an sti longblock (about $1750
from dealership) with drop in pistons (about $450
depending on brand), and pnp'd/upgraded springs/retainers sti heads (about$700
for parts and labor), your not going to want to run a 39 on it. Even tuned on the 39, over 320 wtq would shred a wrx tranny (usually 3rd gear). Also needed are ARP headstuds and new head gaskets (around $400
It gets expensive because you can't just do the motor. You have to do the tranny and the brakes just to be safe and in order not to break anything and that is where the $$$ goes. Right around $4000
goes to the tranny/hubs/axles/brakes swap not to mention labor if you're not doing yourself. You will also need 5x114.3 wheels. Sti engine/car harness/ecu/cluster will run you around $1500
(for parts no labor).
Also need turbo, injectors, fuel pump, intercooler, blah blah
And I know im missing a bunch of stuff but this will start to hint at an idea of price. Notice all prices are an estimate, it depends on what type of deals you can find and get.
