Subaru's 2014-15 New Vehicles to be 15% Lighter

Fuji Heavy Industries revealed that it's Subaru brand vehicles launched in 2014-2015 will be 15% lighter on average than the current lineup. To meet this goal, the proportion of high-tensile steel used in vehicle frames will expand from 10-20% to 50%. Also, the usage of resin parts will increase. The existing shared platform (chassis) for the main-sellers such as the 「Impreza」 will be modified to shed weight, which will allow for an improvement in fuel consumption.

As FHI is already focusing on gradually implementing measures to satisfy the fuel consumption regulations in Japan, the US, and Europe that ultimately seek to curb CO2 emissions, the weight reduction project will run in parallel and be carried out in two stages. In 2011-2012, curb weights will be reduced by an average of 10%. By 2015, a reduction of an additional 5 points will be realized.

High-tensile steel plates are thinner than ordinary steel plates of the same strength. As a material that can reduce weight while maintaining durability, high-tensile steel is being noticed by all auto manufacturers.

富士重、２０１４―１５年度に投入する新車重量を１５％軽量化

富士重工業は２０１４―２０１５年度に投入する新車の重量を現行比で平均１５％軽量化する。ボディーの骨格 部品を中心に高張力鋼板（ハイテン）の採用を増やし、ハイテン比率を現状の１０―２０％から５０％以上に高 める。樹脂部品の採用も拡大する。「インプレッサ」など主力車で共有するプラットフォーム（車台）は、現行 をベースに設計を変更し、軽量化により燃費を改善する。

富士重は日米欧で自動車の二酸化炭素（ＣＯ２）排出量を抑えるための燃費規制が段階的に強化されることを見 据え、軽量化の目標値を２段階で設定する。２０１１―２０１２年度に現行車種平均比で１０％、その後２０１ ５年度をめどにさらに５ポイント改善する。

ハイテンは同強度の一般鋼材に比べ鋼板の肉厚が薄い。耐久性を維持したまま軽量化できる素材として各社が注 目している。
