Wheels are a very individual choice. For me.....I know how many times I "find" a pothole and say out loud "boy....I'm glad I've stuck with 17's" because any 18 would be bent. I'm sticking with 17's on my LGT in a 7" width with a bit of offset go get them more outside the car.
This also works well for track. To stay in class, I gotta stick with 17x7 and the offset can't be more than 5mm from stock.

I think this is good advice. 18" wheels look cool, but they bend more often from potholes and give you a harsher ride (due to a shorter tire sidewall).
EDIT: Just FYI, I run 17" x 8" rims on my summer wheels. Come May they will have 235/40 17 tires.
