ok so long story as short as possible
doing control arm installation and I removed the splash guard and u-brace. while under the car I noticed a little more oil staining than usual. I began to search around to see if I could notice a leak or a tell tale sign or oil leaking. what I found was on the driver side, there was oil residue (enough that wiping it with your hand you can tell its oil) on the bottom back side of the timing cover.
I also own a 95 legacy wagon that I have completely resealed the front of the motor do to a leaking cam seal so my first though was OH CRAP NOT AGAIN. On a EJ205 the process it a much bigger pita than a EJ22. Then I started thinking: unlike the legacy I have never seen an oil stain under the car or seen it effect oil consumption. Then I started thinking and looking around and the oil fill tube is directly about the driver side cams.
The rubber seal on the back side of the timing cover for both in the intake and exhaust cams are saturated with oil, so if you press or squeeze on them you will get oil on your finger, passenger side is bone dry. Has anyone else had oil spillage during changes seep down the back of the timing covers. Is this even plausible? I really don't want to have to tear that apart if its not the seals - as it will be a $$ intensive process (timing belt, water pump, oil pump, ect ect)
Car is 65,000 miles, get driven 4-6k a year or less and I didn't really want to do the timing belt and anchillary devices until 75k when I planned on some more "fun" maintenance
