I'm not sure what got you wound up but the simple point that was trying to be made here is that there is nothing overly complicated (as you suggested) about recommending the use of paint-specific products. It's not necessarily a matter of an eraser being a "big no-no". .....just that there are better tools & methods for the job.
Some folks like to take care of what they own and their choices of tools, products & methods reflect that. ....if that is in someway viewed as a sort of peculiar veneration for an inanimate object, c'est la vie I suppose.
