Because of craptacular diesels that GM brought out back in the 70s and 80s that turned Americans against the idea of a diesel in a passenger car...
... it's the similar reason to why Americans won't buy hatchbacks - they got completely turned off by them back in the 70s and 80s by awful efforts like the Gremlin and Omni and other similar crapmobiles.
Oh yea, and the fact that diesel is actually still more expensive than Premium gasoline in many areas of the US, will keep diesel cars out of most American driveways.
