... it's the similar reason to why Americans won't buy hatchbacks - they got completely turned off by them back in the 70s and 80s by awful efforts like the Gremlin and Omni and other similar crapmobiles.

Oh yea, and the fact that diesel is actually still more expensive than Premium gasoline in many areas of the US, will keep diesel cars out of most American driveways.

Diesels should have been the fuel of choice for 90% of all Detroit SUVs/pickups for decades now, but that's now what happened is it?
I do not agree with the hatchback statement. We have so many different hatchback choices right now..how can you say they are not selling:

Mazda 3
Golf
Yaris
Fit
Mini
Aveo
G3
Astra
Fiesta (soon)
Polo (soon)
Matrix
XB
Accent
Soul
Rio5
Impreza
Versa
