Was the slit before or after the MAF? If it was after, the car was likely running lean as the engine was really getting more air than the MAF was reading. This would turn your plugs white. Did you notice higher temps? I'm guessing the hesitations you felt were detonation? In which case, don't drive the car till its fixed.

Anybody else, am I way off base here?
