Paint thinner is a huge no go because of the chemicals that it contains. A lot of them are/can be super harful to the clear coat if left on for more than a few seconds, plus the hard rubbing action that is taking place... Gas in my eyes is far better.



Not really that harsh from looking at the ingredients that make up thinner, but here is what happens after about 30~ seconds in a plastic drinking cup.



Do you want something that does that to a plastic on your clear coat? Yeah... I sure do not.
