The last time I went down an unmaintained dirt road in my OBS the sound of the brush hitting the undercarriage of my car was unnerving.
I don't have any problems with debris being kicked up into the engine bay with my Primitive plate. Now if I went through some deep puddles (off road) I might but I imagine that would happen with any plate or cover.
