It turns off the DRL, extending the bulb time if you're the type that does a lot of daytime driving. I just use the single click e-brake method and ignore the brake warning lamp. If you figure the runtime including DRL hours, the bulbs probably last as long as any others. My passenger side low beam is still the original, but I do notice that it is dimmer than the driver side, which I replaced last year.
All of my past SUbaru's had DRL's and NONE of them ever had a headlight go out at all. My Tribeca is a different story...
