Assuming 100% of that is commuting and you have 3 weeks vacation during which you don't drive at all, that's still less than 50 miles a day. For a family, having a road trip worthy car and an electric commuter makes perfect sense even at a 50 mile range.
The median distance is more important than average since long distance trips skew the results. The median and average are both covered by 40 miles. The leaf exceeds that, but will wear down. The model S seems fairly pricey to me for just commuting, but to each their own.
