Out of competition with what? My dad sold his Audi Allroad to buy the Outback, he wouldn't have blinked an eye at the extra $$. The whole point is the Outback is Subaru's most premium vehicle, yet the more lowly Forester is available with higher specs in some areas. A luxury buyer considering a Subaru is going to want both the buttery smooth H6 drivetrain and the HID headlights.
Nothing wrong with lots of luxury options on a car with a pedestrian brand. Have you seen the spec sheet of a Focus Titanium?
