This is a whole lot easier to accomplish than you think. I've been a service tech for over four years now and I can tell you about how low your car is just by looking at the dipstick. Its not a hard concept for some, when your doing that a few times a day every day you get good at eyeballing. So I dont think they would have to drain it just to know how low it was....
But supposedly according to the manual there is one qt between the dots. From what 79 described he was nowhere near being 3/4 qt low.
