Not usable... Our cars are mapped for regular gas, which is i believe 87 in the manual. This means there will be no performance benefits even with a higher octane, all it really means is its easier to ignite. However, If we had an engine tuned for higher octane, it would be beneficial as the engine would be able to pump out more HP at the wheels with the reccommended octane (Ex: 89). However, if you put a lower octane in an engine that reccomends higher octane, you could misfire the engine and damage it (turbos), or reduce the performance of the engine (N/A engines such as the ones in an Infinity G36).

As for the gunk cleaning, im not sure if it really helps clean the engine..... However, I know putting premium gas into bad gas (gas sitting in tank for a few months), then it could help the bad gas ignite (i say this because i had this issue, where my gas had been sitting and there had been a possibility of water in the tank). Anyways my belief is that if those fuel cleaner systems, etc dont work from the auto store, they wont work from the pump either.
Quite possibly the most well written thing I've seen from you. Well said!
