2-2.25" is the recommended size for NA applications. Any larger is pretty much a waste.
Removing a resonator is a cheap, quick, and easy way to get more sound. Also, there are many options for High-flow cats out there that won't break the bank. Your car is far past the point of age and mileage where you can replace it legally.
